Sennheiser Headphones are the brand I might get for my birthday. What's the brand you're using?

I am using Sennheiser as well, HD 280. They are without a doubt the best headphones I have ever used. I realize now I should have got a mic, though. They made a version with a microphone, and for some reason I didn't think to buy that. There have been times it would have been very useful.

I would recommend this model wholeheartedly. Almost a year now with no issues. They are about $100, though, so that could be an issue. Nevertheless, I think they are worth the price.

currently I am using senheiser HD 380 pro headphones they are extremely nice sound deadening headphones. They have an extremely flat frequency response if you can drive them since they have a fairly high impedance. My few gripes with them are with the cable being coiled and way to long for reasonable use and when you first get them they crush your head.

Once they have been broken in and you have the equipment to drive them they are some of the best headphones for the price (150$). Glad I have them but do your research since some of the cheaper or more fashion oriented headphones have some sound issues and reliability.

>>3 I am afraid I am just getting into sound engineering and the like. How long does a set take on average to be burned in or broken in? What kind of equipment sounds better than others?

I was considering getting a dedicated sound card for my custom PC, but I wasn't sure how much better it would sound. I'm starting to think more and more that's actually a good idea.

>>5 I listened to Beats and I liked them, except they seemed pretty expensive ($200+). Do you think they're worth the money?

>>8 Would you mind posting which model you got? It would be super helpful :-)

>>4 First the normal "break in" time for a pair of headphones is between 1 and 3 weeks from my experience and usage habits your millage may very. Second equipment is a very personal experience for me I like a very neutral flat almost clinical frequency response curve that I achieved via a external sound bored, DAC and equalizer. Other people enjoy a more base rich sound with weak highs that are found in most fashion headphones of late such as Beats and skull candy I find the sound characteristics abhorrent but take what I say with a mountain of salt.

Finally an add in sound card from my experience is usually a decent option if you don't wan't an external sound card but most modern mother boards have quite good sound sections. Since you would need to spend $80+ to get a internal sound card that is better than most modern built on sound sections. The audiophiles over on http://www.head-fi.org/products/ know what there talking about when it comes to headphones and DACs so do some research and in the end it will probably come down to what DAC chip the company is using.

i find beats to be okay (i do own a pair) but i find that there are better for lower prices. with beats you just pay for the name. its weird in my opinion.

I have some v-moda headphones and earbuds. After going through earbuds at least once a month I got some v-moda's to try and they lasted me over a year. So I upgraded to the lp's and I am very pleased. The sound quality is very good. Also they are very durable and don't break easily.

One of the best features is the detachable headphone cord I use as an auxiliary cord. Just the cord is about 15 bucks and is well over a yard long. Way better quality than the aux cords at the store and its cheaper than them too.

Sennheisers are fantastic, but if you want the best quality and price, go for Sony MDR-7506-es. Probably the most widely used studio headphones. You aren't going to find a better pair in that price range. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_MDR-V6 for the V6-es which are basically the older version).

>>14 I've heard very good things about that set. The last time I bought a pair of headphones, my choices came down to either those or the HD 280 Pro. It was eventually decided by availability at the store I bought them at. The only issue is I want to get a headset (with a mic) for my next pair, not sure if there is a version of those with a microphone.

Do you own a pair of the MDR-7506-es?

>>15 I own both the HD 280s and the MDR-7506-es. Both pairs are fantastic, but the Sony headset just beats out the Sennheisers in the sharpness of the sound. Unfortunately, you won't find many studio headphones with microphones. Your options are 1) buy a separate micrphone that can sit on your desk or 2) get a quality pair of gaming headphones like something from Plantronics or Turtle Beach.
