Lately I've been obsessed with the idea of getting a Japanese flip phone and making it work in the US. But I have no idea what that would entail exactly. If anyone has any ideas...

Docomo phones made between 2008 (905 series)-2010 will be locked and require a hypersim. April 2011 onwards are more likely sold as unlocked in the second hand market because those phones can be unlocked by the carrier, but you'll have to check with the buyer to confirm that. For which network, only AT&T and T-Mobile on their GSM networks can be used.

Avoid Softbank as they are more trouble to deal with than they are worth, but there are some phones like the 740SC that are softunlocked so you can just put your SIM card in it and use it like any other unlocked phone. Again, AT&T/T-Mobile GSM network only.

AU/Wilcom phones just won't work at all, don't bother.

Hmm, now I'm really thinking of getting one specially since the first cell I had was in japan which I lost on a trip to sapporo which sucked since I really liked it. Thanks for the info though someone173
