Bitcoin's value has dropped sharply after one of the largest trading exchanges said there was a flaw in the virtual currency's underlying software.

MtGox said it had halted transfers to external Bitcoin addresses on Friday after detecting "unusual activity".

It said an investigation had revealed it was possible for thieves to fool the transaction process so that double the correct amount of bitcoins would be sent.

Bitcoins fell from $700 (£427) to $540.

Eh I might not be understanding what they are, or how dire the situation may be, but I can't seem to care for something like online monopoly money.

Oh, yes you can. That's the whole point of mining bitcoin is to make money. 1 BC is roughly = $540 USD, over the past drop in the week.

It's not a stock, dunno why so many people thought it'd be a good idea to invest so much without expecting a crash in value.
