Who does DIY projects, likes to build and make things, or invent things?
Or wishes they could?

2 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2014-01-12 06:54 ID:wH+sjggd [Del]

In a loose sense, I do DIY projects at home. I've replaced parts in my truck myself (heater core, negative cable). In high school, I took woodworking and built an end table, as well as a contortion cube. I replaced the Hard Drive and RAM sticks in my laptop myself. When things around the house break, I usually try to find a way to fix them myself. It's a good life skill to learn.

Now, in the sense of inventing, it's a little out of my league. The most I've built was a passive solar chicken coop when I was in university, and that was while being on an engineering team.

I am good with conceptualizing things, however. My goal is to become a mapping technician, not to map new places, but to remap existing locations in order to discover ways to optimize the environmental features. That's my niche.

Ahh, i see what you mean. But I suppose I was a little vague about what I meant by DIY. By DIY, I meant projects that aren't just fixing things and that usually require a little more technical skill.
Also, I'll clarify more on 'inventions'. When I say that, I mean inventing things from scratch. Drawing 'blueprints', then making components, then the first prototype, etc. For instance, I've made some draft prints of a stun baton, stun knuckles, a stun knife. I also make other, more random things like a combination climbing/fighting hook.

>>5 Cool. Just wondering, but you don't 'invent' anything? You know, design, make, and name something that's entirely your own idea?

7 Name: cell rosos : 2014-01-16 17:44 ID:0qn875tO [Del]

i do a little bit of inventing but because of reasons i am unable to bring the designs that would work into real life. mostly low funds. for instance i have made a design for the AT's from a conversation in this section from a little while ago that does not need to be recharged or use gas has complete safety features and many more things, i have designed a watch that keeps track of seconds minutes hours and days since it was last restarted, i have designed a car that with the right engine would not use gas or have to be plugged in for electricity, and i have designed many electrical and multiform weapons as in no recharge needed tazers for the electrical and a blow dart - sword for the multiform weapon. ar

I enjoy drawing out mechanical things that have a possibility of working, such as the thread I made a while ago about the exoskeletal legs that probably doesn't matter any more. I recently recorded one of my ideas about integrating a mouse into a keyboard for online gaming. Kind of shaped like a go stone, with keys on the top, and the round bottom allows the user to use their wrists to move around. The mouse keys are between the split keyboard halves, and the scrolling device is between the keyboard keys and mouse keys. This way, the user doesn't have to constantly switch between typing and clicking on the mouse (because I for one have a sore shoulder the next day) and simply integrates them both into a fully interactive deflated-ball-shaped control pad. A small flat spot in the center of the bottom allows it to sit vertically on another flat surface, such as a table. For maximum mobility, it will also have to be wireless. Cables getting in the way and such. Predicted dimensions are about 8"x8"x4". The actual creation of it will take a few months of research and some talking to people who know more about electronics than myself.

Should I approach somebody with this? If so, I'm gonna copyright it first.

Finished designing a reasonable prototype for laser calipers. Much simpler than the last one and more bulky, even though it's only like 2"x1.5"x1.5" for the working unit part. I gotta merge the two designs before it can be fully functional, however. That shouldn't take long.

>>23 I finished those "blueprints" that aren't really blueprints because its more of a multi-angle rendering of the idea itself with no schematic backing (which I can make in a few weeks, my book is dropping like next week so I'm gonna be hammered with requests). I need to find a time to scan it and get 'em to you, see what kinda magic you can work. If you need some of the custom parts, I'll make some plastic ones and try to mail them to you. Is that okay?

I do a lot of designing and I have ideas for inventions but I always run into the same problem. My idea is way out of my skill level. I like robotics so I have tons of ideas for robots, but don't have that much knowledge of robotics. The most I can do is place my servos and type and determine what sensors I want, how many, and where. I really like autonomous robots. I have not been able to actually build one of my designs, yet.

Idea for DIY 3D movie presentation:
Ok, so forgive me if i start to ramble here. You take your comp and run it through an A/V splitter to two projectors so that you have the same/simultaneous image on both. You get one of those 3D glasses that you get from the movies and cut it in half so that you separate the lenses. Set each lens in front of each projector thus polarizing the light coming out of each projector. Now all you have to do is set the images off a bit (like in the movies) so that each eye gets a bit different image, set up chairs, crates, boxes, chair-like apparatuses, get everyone to bring in (or provide) movie-theater 3D glasses (or glasses that don't require a radio connection) and enjoy the movie. If anyone can/has tried this please respond to let me know what happened.

>>34 Sometime next week. I have to do some other stuff to specify the measurements and placement of input buttons and interaction pads for the top half. I have no schematic to do anything of the green and silver working parts inside with because I don't know how to do the thing, and I'll scan and email the graph paper to you (I included a scale on the side, and if the need be so great, I also put measurements on the drawing itself).

>>48 doesn't seem that hard. Gonna need a cpu and set up both projectors as the monitor in the settings. My suggestion is to offset the images a bit and use those Imax-like glasses.

I, by no means, have any idea what I'm doing, just making suggestions off of hunches I deem reasonable.

Maybe a curved projection surface if there's only one user, so as to have any given point on the 'screen' equidistant from the user's eyes as any other given point, less data for the brain to factor in I guess.

I do think you're gonna need ceiling mounts or tables for the projectors themselves, however. Good luck!

AAAAAAAAlright... Let's see what we have here. I've got a handful of new ideas, and I need an 'angel' in order to realize them. The rest I can learn to do online, and all I gotta do is make sure my papers are safe.

In the meantime, to actually contribute to this, the next post I make on this will be to a steam generator mk1 prototype (I can probably improve it with 5 mins worth of thought but whatever)

Theoretically, this should work, but I don't have the funding/materials to make a prototype for testing. Here are the labels in alphabetical order:

A.) a multi-faceted spherical water tank made of reversed one-way mirrors (an inside out disco ball to make the water hot using sunlight)
B.) the turbine that rotates from the steam and makes the electricity
C.) the generator unit. This sketch was primarily to figure out how to power the generator, and not necessarily about the generator itself, hence the lack of detail. Works just like a hydroelectric plant though.
D.) adding water through this nozzle in case there isn't enough initially
E.) an intercooler to bring the air temperature back down and condenses the steam back to a liquid state, which then leads back to A, and the cycle resumes.

I know I should probably have the turbine sideways with the steam pushing the tops of the blades, but like I said, this is just a crappy first sketch. Use at will/your own risk.

Had an amazing idea yesterday. I figured out how to send real hugs over the internet. Not even joking. I have to design the whole machine and everything but it's officially possible. Not only that, the machine can be used in virtual environments such as classrooms, and with the touch capabilities, it's possible to guide the hand of a learning student in a cooking class when he's making virtual stir-fry. Or for military families who miss their husbands and wives so much can finally hug, and Long-Distance Relationships can too. Walking on the beach holding hands, getting to see your child 'in person' for the first time from miles away, or even just conducting a meeting of friends who've never seen each other.

The point of it is to make interactive holograms you can 'touch,' and with the technology I've known, it is possible to do with a few innovations.

I developed this idea for an English paper and for primary use with LDR's, but it seems more practically used in a 'classroom' environment, with everything going online nowadays, its hard to learn chemistry when you need one eye on the reaction and the other on the screen. I'll need to design it later, but so far most of the idea is sound. I think it's the first of its kind, which means there's still a ton of advancements to be made, but so far it seems to be alright.

I'll design it later today and show part of it. If anyone's really interested in wanting to see it happen, I'll see if I can try to patent the design, maybe start a kickstarter. The previous sentence is probably not going to happen, but even still.

I've had a 3D printer for home use for a while now. I plan on using it to make blades for a Gorlov Helical hydro-turbine design as part of a senior design project. Even though the size would be much larger than my print volume, it is a viable idea if you print everything in sections that can be joined together. A simple mixture of acetone and ABS plastic creates a paste than can be applied on ABS prints for a strong bond. It is ridiculously strong for how quick and easy it is; feels like one solid piece.

Other than school projects, I want to make prop items and other models from games, movies, etc. as a hobby. That will most likely be started when I'm done with school and have an actual job.

So I wanted to try out a Raspberry Pi build, similar to the Touch Pi (found here www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwg4JfRPClo) but have it run only the DMPC Digimon V-Pet game for windows. Microsoft have said they're making a Windows 10 version that is compatible with the RPi 2, so I was hoping to use that. The idea behind this build is to recreate one of those old-style Digimon V-Pets. However, firstly I wanted to ask if there was any other way of running the windows-only program (DMPC) on the Pi without windows 10? And secondly, I would like to make three hard-buttons on the side of the Pi for interaction. I've done some research and I'm struggling to find a usable method to add these - any suggestions?
Any feedback is appreciated!

>>81 while it is technically possible but as amazing as a raspberry Pi is they aren't the most computationally powerful devices so while technically possible I would try but it might be hard and not run all that well

A school is coming up with the issues with the processing power issues of a raseberry pi with parallel computing motherboards. you can probably get some from them:

I D-I-Y with 3d printers and I am currently making my own filament!!!!

>>83 Good info!

Sort of a general statement on the topic at hand, I plan on grabbing up a few of the boards from http://www.hardkernel.com/main/main.php.

From the lists they are pretty cheap, and look well made. Most are more expensive than Raseberry Pi, but would likely handle this better than Raseberry Pi. These are Android OS native, but you can order a pre-loaded Linux on an eMMc, or SD.

The ODRIOD-C1 is a quad for $35. Basically the power of a Windows XP computer by todays standards for $35.

>>84 You're a joke for thinking people should even touch a raseberry pi before learning what makes up an arudino.

>>85 Ah, so now I know what I'm dealing with. You're someone that likes to think they got the lockdown on information. Cute. You're a joke for pulling so many logical fallacies in less than ten minutes.

>>86 You've been dealing with someone who doesn't take kindly to little shits like you coming on my board and filling people with false hope and fallacies. You think I like arguing about something I enjoy and live for? No. Faggots like you come here, post shit like http://dollars-bbs.org/tech/res/1423309163.html . It's misinformation and there is a huge consequence for it. This shit is simplifying and obstructing the beauty and complexity of electronics. It's one of the reasons I can't have a conversation about cpu architecture where as 20 years ago, I could with someone my age.

>>87 I'm sorry, where in the blue fuck did I spread misinformation? You are directly attacking me, and being intellectually dishonest. This isn't YOUR board. It's for anyone who wants to post here. I don't give a shit what you think you know. And that thread is answered. AGI is the closest it gets. The other thread is ENTIRELY different in concept, and isn't AGI.

Fuck off with your pretentious self, prick.

>>88 You argued that a Sibyl System is possible with our current technology, when it's really not. That's more dumb than saying AIs are possible with current tech.

Here's a few pointers so you can educate yourself, or get in the right direction. Search up on Wirth's law, and then Ohm's Law. Listen, I'm sorry, but a lot of all that cool stuff just won't happen.

>>89 Hey! That's better my friend. We can all be friendly here. I'm not looking to be a troll, or bastard to anyone. You really shouldn't either.

I'll read those, and what I mean was a probability generator could be possible. It just wouldn't be human. It wouldn't be the same as Sybil, no. It probably wouldn't even be able to communicate with us. I do think that it will be possible to measure stress levels eventually via retina/precipitation and other bodily functions. So, to be clear... A system that talks to you, and knows everything about you from pointing a gun... Obviously not, but a "crime coefficient" could be something based on current stress levels and previous records. Totally possible. Dominators on the other hand would be impossible.

Oh, and if Stephen Hawking finds it important enough to suggest that AGI could ruin the world it's probably worth mentioning that it's a possibility. Not only that, Google's also already built a learning program for language input. Learning software is a thing already.

I was slowly inventing a semi-perpetual generator that uses magnets and is powered using the waves from the ocean. The idea is that it'll store up the power the magnets make through the passing-throughs of other magnets and the magnets are like sides, they cause that extra push. Eventually it'll build up energy and boats can go up to them and plug into them.

There's more than just magnets making it work, though.
