Just a smallish little question: do you think, cracking wifi is legal?

If yes, I got news for you.
If no... y u post here in the first place?

>>2 Is it illegal? I actually don't think cracking someone's password is illegal.

If you do something illegal using that information, that's different. But, as far as I know, there is no breaking and entering equivalent law for computers.

>>3 why would anyone do this? I'm sure it's not to tell his neighbor that his wifi is unsafe...

>>4 No, it would be to get free internet, or otherwise divert attention to someone else.

I don't know if that's actually illegal, though.

I'm fairly certain it's illegal to do it no matter intentions. So long as they feel the right to press charges, is when they take it seriously as a broken law.

>>6 What would you be charged with?

>>7 You could be charged with federal felony computer fraud under the computer fraud and abuse act for accessing computers without authorization. (Though look into it yourself as IANAL)

That being said, if you own the computer/router, get written permission, or the person simply doesn't care, you're probably safe.

>>1 Backtrack itself is essentially ubuntu with cracking applications on it. There should be something called aircrack on it.

Also, businesses often monitor their networks, or sometimes use more complex login systems than typically used on home routers, so you probably run greater risk there, or may find it risky to actually use the password once cracked.

I recommend against using it unless it's on your own router, as you're either running a bit of a risk, or just disrupting the wifi of normal people otherwise.

Oh boy...another script kiddie got his hands on Backtrack...

You clearly have no academic interest so I refuse to help you, and I would urge everyone responding to sage this.

While I would love to help anyone learn about security and security tools, I am not doing it to help you break the law.

Honestly there is no reason why everyone should be getting all uppity about this, and for those who say its illegal i'm sure you don't have all you're facts. Backtracking is illegal ONLY if used with illegal intentions, otherwise it is legal and actually pushed for by major companies who are looking for people who can test their online security as cyber crimes have begun to grow in the recent years. Plus what he is doing is not something that is secretive, any 5th grader can search google for a hacking and virus creating software and get it for free. The fact that he is coming here asking for help isn't something to harass him about.

Now to answer your question the only way I know to gain WiFi access would be to claim the information needed from that's person computer. This can be done multiple ways by going through the computer hard-drive or applying a keyboard logger program on the machine

(Can I connect to your Wi-Fi, please ?)
O

/\ And if the guy refuses then you have nothing to do on his network.

Personally, as a engineering student I need to do some network experiments. Either I do it at school supervised by the teacher, or at my place on an old router dedicated to that, where only my devices are connected.
