Desktops going out of style? (14)

1 Name: !.FGBJdkRA6 : 2013-06-18 15:28 ID:ptMvvEid [Del]

If you are like me, you probably prefer a desktop for most computer use. The fact that desktops are more powerful and feature packed than mobile devices is nothing new, neither is the idea that they are not very portable or convenient to move.

That being said, it seems like more and more companies are starting to cater to mobile improvements over desktops. Examples include the fact that Intel's latest releases seem to be focused on improving power consumption, heat, and the integrated graphics in their processors. These are all fine and good, but these are lesser concerns for desktops than for mobile devices. Another example is Windows 8. Look up reviews on it and you will hear that it is designed with touchscreens in mind and is supposed to be annoying to try to use a mouse with. With the increasing popularity of mobile devices, it makes sense that companies would want to cash in on this, but my question is: are going to forget the desktop?

Feel free to answer yes or no, provide evidence, play devil's advocate, or program robot dogs to yell movie quotes at old people. Anything goes.

You still need to use a keyboard if you want to type a long essay, and it's easier to edit text using a mouse keyboard combo instead of a touch screen keyboard combo. So while mobile computing will continue to become more common, desktop setups will never truly go away.

Quick question: Do laptops count as desktops? Yes, somewhat stupid question. :/
Anyways, yes I believe that desktops are going out of style. Possibly for a good reason. They are big, bulky, and hard to move and find a place for. Yet, I've personally found them to be more reliable than laptops and touchscreens. I'd rather have a desktop than almost anything they have out now.

>>3 No, laptops do not count, though they are the closest to a desktop without actually being one. They are lighter, more portable and are too much more concerned with heat and power consumption to use the same processors as most desktops. The improvements in some of the latest processors would benefit laptops greatly due to the reduced heat and power consumption. It's not a very stupid question though since it points out the phenominon in question.

Thoughts and opinions? Is windows 9 going to be focused on mobile devices as much as I hear that windows 8 is? Are Intel and AMD going to minimize core performance gains in favor of improving integrated graphics and power consumption? Feel free to input any crazy opinion you want, this is an open discussion.

You're all pretty much blind to the gaming community, then. Most if not all computer gaming is done on a desktop. Laptops aren't great for gaming, as they over heat easier, and with desktops you have a lot more products for your desktop to choose from when making your own custom gaming center.

Now they do game on laptops, but it's not as good.

>>5 that's why it's good to get the laptop elevated or equipped with a bottom side fan system. I sometimes game with the AC blasting at the laptop and it evens out the heat.

Again, it's not a good thing for hardcore gamers, Doctor. It can be equipped with stuff, but there are far better products for desktops to choose from, and far beat any gaming laptop out there. Costly, but better.

"gaming laptops" are way more expensive then Gaming Desktops, and of course Desktops are more powerful.

1. Laptops will only last around 3-9 years due to overheating.
2. A "gaming laptop" will do good for 3 years untill it gets outdated and desktops can be always up-to-date.
3. A "gaming laptop" will cost 1,000$+ while a Desktop will cost 800$+/-
4. Laptop services are horrible these days..

Laptops are convenient. If you know what you are doing, you can keep upgrading a gaming laptop for years. A small fan base and I have no issues with overheating. I carry a mouse with me, and have a full sized keyboard on my laptop. A desktop limits me too much. It makes playing games and having lan parties a nightmare, and since I am often out I prefer to be able to take my computer with me, even though it is heavy for a laptop. I just consider it good exercise and don't notice the weight much anymore.

I consider myself a pretty hardcore gamer, and with a quad core, dual solid state drive, 16 gigs of RAM (it could have 32, but it won't improve performance anymore at this point), with and extra 2 gigs dedicated to the HD video card (I opted out on the 3D one, but that was available), and a half a terabyte internal storage. I tend to run games at about 120-150 FPS, lower if I decide to keep chrome, a music player, and pidgin running while playing my game.

I spent about $2000 on my laptop, but it outperforms many of my friends desktops, and there's just something about playing F.E.A.R. in the middle of the night in Central Park that is totally worth the extra money.

The main point is Desktops aren't going out of style. If anything it's on par or higher with most people buying Laptops.

>>9 You can upgrade you RAM nothing more, in 5+ years your laptop will be outdated, you wont be playing the latest games with a stable FPS.

2000$ ? tell me the specs

Away from work I only really use computers for internet surfing and digital art, so I highly prefer a laptop over a desktop. Being limited to one place is torturous.

However, looking back at the main topic, I work at a company that has a lot of sales reps across the US and each one of them is given a tablet to do their presentations on, and they work perfectly for those small task. But here at the home office everyone has a desktop computer. We do a lot video editing and 3D projects and laptops just do not handle those very well.

TL;DR - I think desktops are still going strong. Portability is nice, but not always worth it.

>>12 100% agree with you, I think we reached our final thing with Chrys post, it all depends on the USER and his/her preferences for a PC.

I'm a Gamer and a Programmer therefor I have to have a Desktop to work, a laptop would be good to code on the go but I don't usualy do that.

People who have a PC just to surf the net or to talk to friends should buy a laptop.

Awesome I can now program on the go without a laptop, I just have to use my phone ^^

And that's it, there is not need for me to have a laptop
