Google Fiber is a project to build an experimental broadband internet network infrastructure using fiber-optic communication.

Google Fiber will provide symmetrical connectivity at around 1 gigabit per second, which is about 100 times faster access than what most Americans have. Wi-Fi throughput speeds are lower. 802.11n has a maximum net data rate of 600 Mbit/s, and Wi-Fi net data rates are currently averaging 360 Mbit/s using the 802.11a/b/g/n router that comes with all packages.

My thoughts are that if you cut cable/satellite TV from your household, then Google Fiber is simply the best investment (since you'll easily be able to stream television to your computer in HD, lag free). Otherwise, $70 a month is just too expensive for a ton of people.

Google Fiber is expensive for a person working a small job that doesn't pay very much. But if you are working at a job that will become part of your career, I'm sure you could afford it. I mean, if you're like me who will work for the Police Department you'll probably get around 40,000-50,000 a year (based on economical state and college degree of course).

Also, $70/month is just what it is now. Remember, this is only experimental and is only available in parts of Kansas at the moment. The price very well could go down in the future.

>>3 lolwat. 50k a year isn't standard in this economy. At least, not around here.

70 bucks is expensive, but considering they've just started it and are testing it out, you're right in that the price should go down eventually.

6 Name: King Dude !zXqFpoplY6 : 2012-10-28 16:38 ID:jJu+SadJ [Del]

>>5 I just got that amount from my research on the LAPD.

And I don't know if anyone of you noticed this, but they do offer free internet. So if you can't afford the whopping $70/m you don't have to swap internet providers, just downgrade to free until you can afford it again.

Bearing in mind that the cost of living in Los Angeles is higher than in other parts of the nation, thus making such incomes proportional with a fair amount of wiggle room. But then you have other areas in the nation where the median household income is far less than that. For example, in my town it's $34,000 a year. Things cost less here, but there isn't a lot of income flexibility because of that, so if you want something like this you are going to have to give something up.

Though I do like the idea of the "Free" net. Paying $25/mo for one year and then nothing afterward is a great investment to make.

>>8 It's in Kansas only right now, and Kansas isn't exactly filled with rich people. If the people in Kansas can afford it, I'd expect that a lot of people, but not everyone, could afford it too.

I hope that their experiment is a success. This will pave the way for a new Internet experience for the US if everything goes according to plan. I'm excited!

>>14 For 1GB/s internet, I don't think I'd mind that. Who knows, perhaps Microsoft and Google could team up and create something awesome.

Google is a type of thing I want to do with my projects. Create multiple online and offline services, but of course-it shall take me some time. -.-

Symmetrical connectivity at around 1 gigabit per second?
Death the kid would be proud.

This makes me cry. No, there is nothing that I don't like about it. It just means that I, going into the computer engineering department, have to do more work to keep up with this amazing technology.

19 Name: King Dude !zXqFpoplY6 : 2012-11-15 18:54 ID:jJu+SadJ [Del]

>>18 I remember a few months ago you were asking me what CSS was and the basic details in web programming, and you're telling me you're heading into computer engineering? You better study hard then.

By the way, out of curiosity, what kind of computer engineering are you going in? Networking, Windows applications, Operating Systems, or BIOS/machine code/hardware?

20 Name: Leigha Moscove !9tSeSkSEz2 : 2012-11-16 12:52 ID:nLKGhrhJ [Del]

>>19 I knew what it was, I just didn't know that I knew it. That's the thing with almost everything I know about computers. I know how to work shit, I just don't know the details such as, what this is called, how it does this, and all of that. Basically, I can do it, but, once you hit me with all of these names and fancy words, I'm lost.

21 Name: King Dude !zXqFpoplY6 : 2012-11-16 21:50 ID:jJu+SadJ [Del]

>>20 You knew what it was, but you didn't know that you knew it...

Yeah, good luck with that.

22 Name: Leigha Moscove !9tSeSkSEz2 : 2012-11-18 12:44 ID:7p8gDMmA [Del]

For example, the aglet. It's those little things at the end of a shoelace. Everyone knows what they are, but if someone walked up to them and started talking about an aglet, they'd ask what it was.

They know what it is, but not the name of it.

23 Name: King Dude !zXqFpoplY6 : 2012-11-18 19:31 ID:jJu+SadJ [Del]

>>22 Look, you need to know what it's actually called because if you want servicing for that particular part, "that metal thingy" is unacceptable to right down on the report. Suppose you went to the hardware store to get a part, but you didn't know what it was called. Then you'd waste 30 minutes trying to describe it to the clerk, only to come home with the wrong part. Or suppose you were fixing something at someone's home. Do you want to look like a goddamn fool in front of your customer because you can't answer his questions?

Trust me, learn what it does AND what it's called.

24 Name: Leigha Moscove !9tSeSkSEz2 : 2012-11-19 19:12 ID:7p8gDMmA [Del]

Plenty of people make websites and do not have a clue what CSS codes are. It's not like I'll be going out of my way to say, "I was typing up the CSS codes yesterday." I'll just say, "I was coding the site. The specifics of the type of code in foolish to mention. If I need to know the name of a part to make a computer, then I'll make sure to learn the name of that part. I do not need to know the name of a type of code to program anything. All that's important is that it's being coded, unless specifically asked otherwise.

25 Name: King Dude !zXqFpoplY6 : 2012-11-19 23:28 ID:jJu+SadJ [Del]

>>24 Oh yeah? Then name a few programmers you know that have no idea what CSS code is, but still knows how to use it.

Wow, what a riveting discussion about Google Fiber you two are having.

>>19 Was unnecessary and provoked this nonsense. King Dude, I'm gunna ask you to cut this shit out. I don't care what your reasons are or what your little comeback is going to be, this argument is petty and stupid, so cut it the fuck out.

And Leigha, I suggest you simply stop responding to his provocations. It's kinda hard for him to pick a fight if nobody replies to his posts.

On topic:

I'm pumped as hellll for this! Fiber lines are already things that I use in my industry (namely for long-distance video projection) and I fucking love that shit.

I'll definitely be hopping on to the fiber-line-internet bandwagon as soon as I get the chance!

28 Name: King Dude !zXqFpoplY6 : 2012-11-20 18:52 ID:jJu+SadJ [Del]

>>26 Oh bullshit. You and me both know most of the users on here don't care about half of this stuff in the Technology board. Besides, Leigha doesn't bother checking her Facebook anymore.

>>28 There's still no need for you to be so goddamn snarky at everybody you dub to be "beneath you."

30 Name: King Dude !zXqFpoplY6 : 2012-11-20 21:14 ID:jJu+SadJ [Del]

>>29 The fuck is that supposed to mean? I don't believe anyone is "beneath me". I'm snarky at anyone who's annoying.

31 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2012-11-21 15:13 ID:gZtG63lZ [Del]

>>30 The way you talked down to Leigha was nothing short of fucked, and if you can't see that then I pity you.

32 Name: King Dude !zXqFpoplY6 : 2012-11-21 15:24 ID:jJu+SadJ [Del]

>>31 Sometimes people need to be talked down to. Sometimes people need their ass kicked once in a while. If they don't, when they do rather than shrugging it off and moving on they might just get crippled by it instead.

Besides, I was only semi-joking. But what I didn't joke about was the fact that you cannot "Not know what it is, but still know how it works". Sure, it makes /some/ sense, but overall it's foolish.
