I have a friend who is having trouble with his computer, his dog pulled the cord and it fell down... anyways I'm not an expert in computers and his computer is acting up badly, either his icons are popping around the screen so much thats the only thing he sees or his toolbar is popping on the screen so much thats all he see's (forgot which he said) but this seems to happen almost all the time for his computer since it fell, I wanted to know, can fixing the OS help the problem, if not what could, and if it is a matter of replacing a certain part what part, how much would it cost and what level of computer maintenance would be best for this task.

Could you describe the problem in detail? I'm not really sure what you're asking. Perhaps you could record a video on your phone and upload it?

Q: What cord did the dog pull out? May* have something to do with it.

The problem probably lies with the computer smashing against the ground, however. What probably happened is that something fell loose on the mainframe of the computer, perhaps the graphics card. If you unscrew the computer to get to the inside, check to make sure everything's in place.

Q: Also, is it a laptop, or a desktop?
Q: Does it have a tower?
Q: What model computer is it?
Q: Is it a windows, mac, or linux?

I'm sure if you gave more info I (or someone else here) could figure out the problem faster. Hope what's in this post helps though, I'm not going off much.

and sorry for a third, as far as more details about the situation, it is gonna be hard for me to describe more info than what I have without the visual or seeing it in detail myself

If it's a lappy, then it's more vulnerable to physical damage. (Unless you buy one of those laptops built for the army, freaking impossible to break).
What most likely happened is a hardware issue, rather than a software issue. Try going to a nearby computer store and ask them to diagnose your computer (they should do it for free). Based on what was dislodged/ smashed, it can cost from a little to a lot. If it does cost a lot, ask them specifically what's wrong, and get you and a friend to take a screwdriver to it and replace the parts yourself. Much cheaper that way.

thanks for the help, I actually was thinking of repairing it with my friend anyways, unless it was a tough fix, I would either let him do it to his own computer or tell him to take it to a repair shop XP

Simply go to a store/ shop to help diagnose the problem, then try and do it with a friend. Finding out what's wrong can be a big help.

I will make sure to make him do that, and by the way, I should be able to get a screen shot tomorrow, so I can get some feedback through that too

Just how old is this laptop? My hypothesis is that the screen was damaged when it fell, but the rest of the hardware is fine. Basically, you'd need to get the screen itself replace, and given the cost of labor + materials, I'd say you're better off with a new laptop anyway.

If you decide you want to fix it yourself, I'd recommend getting a screen from an online wholesaler. You'll need to take apart the casing surrounding the screen, and be very careful to disconnect the old one and install the new one.

>>12 is right. My computer screen started to do a similar thing when it got too old.

Well that looks....
Disturbing.
Computer screen is one of the options though, best check it out.

Well I would go with the screen but he said that it happened even plugging into a moniter

>>15 Well if that's the case, then the only other thing I can think of is that the graphics controller got damaged in the fall. So...

-If the laptop uses a graphics card, replace the graphics card.
-If the laptop uses integrated graphics (the CPU connected to the motherboard drives the graphics), then buy a new laptop.

Re install the OS. If that doesn't work, send it in for repair, the Hard Drive is probably scratched.
