Q&A Program from the dollars (35)

1 Name: Ulrich : 2011-12-05 09:03 ID:yZxtZVJy [Del]

Okay I was wondering. Would it not be awesome If we had a Info broker system, you know someone who knew anything about anyone or any event. Just building off the genius who created the texting group, So If you know were I am going with this feel free to post.

2 Name: Misuto!M4ZBq07Cs. : 2011-12-05 11:50 ID:iR61ztcg [Del]

That would require someone taking the time and effort to compile literally endless amounts of information for the sake of a group of people that likely wouldn't care too much in the first place. An info broker is a specialist - one who has connections and the ability to pull information about any given source at will due to them. As an anonymous collective of people from all over the world in the first place, that isn't even necessary since we can just ask each other about things.

Besides, this isn't even related to technology, unless you were suggesting a system wherein we could collectively share information.

But that's, you know, a website.

We have one of those.

Isnt that just facebook?

4 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2011-12-05 13:31 ID:cDh0OxS7 [Del]

Misuto, you are such a beautiful smartass.

Now on a serious note, the internet really is something of a broker system as Misuto said above. If you really wanted to keep tabs on people, at least on a local level, you would need access to CCTV cameras. Fortunately, there are now at least four on every city block in every modern city in the United States. Unfortunately, each one is a protected system; good luck getting access.

Now some of these are public. The state of California and the state of Nevada both use live traffic feeds in their major cities, and they could be useful for other purposes if the conditions were right. However, they aren't the best quality; most of them are broadcasting in 240p or 360p, so you would need ideal lighting and no wind distortion for the clearest picture.

Now let's say Anonymous/Legion finds a way to access the systems that the public cannot normally get into. After all, there are cyberterrorists who can hack into power plants and break shit. The idea of hacking into CCTV feeds isn't that farfetched to me.

And then there's another thing. You know the OnStar system that packages with every GM vehicle these days? It basically works by assigning your vehicle an ID, tracking it via satellite, and controlling certain aspects of your car. Now there are some fun things you could theoretically do with it.

For the hero in you, if you see a crime being committed or a major accident, you can always push the BIG RED BUTTON that signals police, fire or medical. Your car's ID is noted and GPS zeroes in on your location. Then dispatchers will come to your location to assist; it even works if you are moving. It's particularly useful if you can't get to your cell phone (such as when you're driving since most states have Hands Free Laws now). I've gotten to use such a system and I must say it's a great thing.

Additionally, the company OnStar can turn your car off. I shit you not, they came out with a stolen car commercial in 2009 to demonstrate this very fact. Guy steals car, guy gets out on freeway, OnStar turns off engine, car slows to a crawl, police move in. It's totally badass.

But what if you're a villain? What could you do with these sorts of things? For starters, if you can match every vehicle owner to their vehicle's ID, you can find out who is driving what car and use GPS to track them. Anywhere. Anytime. Period. Second, you can control their car.

So on the subject of information gathering, there are technologies that, in the right hands, could make these things very possible, and in the wrong hands, cause some very Izaya-ish trolling across the country.

>>2 Yeah but I can do this. Text any question for an example to 542-542 and you get an answer that your looking for.

>>4 "So on the subject of information gathering, there are technologies that, in the right hands, could make these things very possible, and in the wrong hands, cause some very Izaya-ish trolling across the country."

Yeah but this is a project just like the dollars website you dont know how it will turn out

>>6 Quite right. For the time being my fears are rather unnecessary. I just wanted to throw the ideas out there. This is the tech board after all.

There was a mission about three months ago titled "Got your Nocks?" which basically had to do with getting a pair of binoculars or a rangefinder for surveillance purposes. I'm surprised it didn't really take off. Then again, it wasn't presented all that well so there is that.

I think it would be cool for members of the Dollars to train themselves in surveillance and optic data collection, among other things.

Right I hear you on that one. thats why I need to get this Q&A program project off the ground. I would like you, and Izaya, Sleepology and Insert to team up with me on this.If thats alright

9 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2011-12-05 16:19 ID:cDh0OxS7 [Del]

You want Sleepology and *insertnamehere* to team up with you? Easier said than done. But I will help out if I can. I have a good knowledgebase to work with for generating ideas in this regard. But I have other commitments I need to work on simultaneously so progress may be slow.

First step I would recommend is computer literacy. After all, collecting data is easy; interpreting said data is the hard part.

10 Name: Proxy !kz26FLRB.w : 2011-12-05 16:39 ID:5EthwoGG [Del]

Can you elaborate a bit? I thought you were just talking about a general Q&A like ChaCha or KGB but with members of the dollars instead of computer responces. But koller is talking about actual surveillance and such. Just confused a bit on what you're actually proposing :/.

11 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2011-12-05 16:50 ID:cDh0OxS7 [Del]

We're going under the assumption of the latter. And to do so requires a clear understanding of both urban and rural environments. One needs to know a little bit of zone mapping as well as topographical mapping, population densities, major activity centers, landmarks with large horizontal/vertical visibility, etc.

12 Name: Ulrich : 2011-12-05 18:32 ID:cOrk+ZRz [Del]

>>11 I agree. I have a program called gamemaker that will allow me to create any program like the paging program I've so desperately need for this but not only that it will allow me to create a database, hopefully in co-existance. with the right javascript codes.

>>10 This is going to be live responses at first until I can make it automated.

13 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2011-12-05 18:50 ID:cDh0OxS7 [Del]

>>12 Now that's an interesting approach. If you're serious about this, it's possible to create a replica of your urban/rural environment and run simulations on it, similar to a symbolic Chess-Shogi-Reversi thing (to open that can of worms).

>>13 Yeah I never looked at it from that approach. Then once it works introduce it to the dollars. But the question is how much time will I be putting into it because I'm a high school student and you know how that goes, I will have weekends holidays, Sickdays, and afterschool evenings

17 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2011-12-05 19:08 ID:cDh0OxS7 [Del]

>>16 Depends on your skill level. I recommend putting 30 minutes a day into it, then three hours Friday and three hours Saturday. It'll take time but like you said yourself, we know how that goes.

18 Name: griffin : 2011-12-05 19:15 ID:2kxzQFTs [Del]

I'd love see that when its done

19 Name: Ulrich : 2011-12-05 19:50 ID:16GIObzX [Del]

>>17 Yeah I just got the program so the protoype might have a glitch.

>>18 Yeah I can hardly wait myself the problem is the trolls asking stupid questions about members or events any suggestions?

20 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2011-12-05 22:41 ID:Cju+D+TK [Del]

Haters gonna hate, Taters gonna tate. Just ignore them.

21 Name: Ulrich : 2011-12-06 08:24 ID:yZxtZVJy [Del]

>>20 Right. So are you a admin?

22 Name: sleepology : 2011-12-06 08:38 ID:wuOcdYkf [Del]

>>21 learn hierarchy

23 Name: Ulrich : 2011-12-06 13:57 ID:uzHI2liM [Del]

>>22 sorry I remember now.

>>20 Hey I'm gathering components for the pager/sms messenger
so I wont get started on the first part til a while

24 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2011-12-07 03:43 ID:70QT14dT [Del]

That's fine. In the meantime I want to expand on the surveillance idea through different uses of map projections, geographic information systems and global positioning. So that's what I'll work on over the next month or two.

25 Name: Ulrich : 2011-12-07 18:41 ID:wk5vvmxU [Del]

>>24 good idea. good luck dude I probably wont be on for a while

26 Name: Akask !5Guf3tLZks : 2011-12-07 19:22 ID:kpUTKtA3 [Del]

Before I jump into the conversation, I would like to present a question: What would you do with info like this?

27 Name: Ulrich : 2011-12-07 19:43 ID:XGzqqXFR [Del]

>>26 give it to other members of the dollars of course, on SMS request that is. What else would I do with it. I am not like Izaya from the Anime if thats what your getting at. Its going to consist of "News" "Insiders" "Basic info on other members" and the basic info is going to be hard to gather, I have to much on my plate already, I dont even think its possible without a partener or to, I mean facebook wasnt created by Mark Zuckerberg alone. am I right

28 Name: Akask !5Guf3tLZks : 2011-12-07 20:08 ID:kpUTKtA3 [Del]

>> 27 And what will this program do?

29 Name: Ulrich : 2011-12-07 21:07 ID:RHkEGoJc [Del]

>>28 you ask a question it qives an answer but only about the dollars, news etc kinda like KGB

30 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2011-12-08 01:45 ID:70QT14dT [Del]

>>26 Data of any sort can have an undefinable amount of uses. As far as the Dollars go it could be used to devise more effective missions. That's the ideal strategy.

31 Name: Ulrich : 2011-12-08 10:22 ID:yZxtZVJy [Del]

>>30 yeah but I think Akask was implying I would miss-use it which is a common misconception about this project

32 Name: Ulrich : 2011-12-10 12:11 ID:iiASmlaZ [Del]

Its going to be a while before I can get the project up and running, I cant get the scripts to work, or recognize them?
Any suggestions?

33 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2011-12-10 17:42 ID:c3YdC+G2 [Del]

I'd recommend external help. See if you can find a tech student who has more information on the matter.

34 Name: Ulrich : 2011-12-10 18:21 ID:Bcfq8z/w [Del]

Well I do have a mutual friend, "The who who introduced me to gamemaker" but they just keep telling me to go to help menu, but that doesnt give much info on scripts. Just on how to make a game

35 Name: MKOLLER !YYk5m0jo12 : 2011-12-11 04:43 ID:c3YdC+G2 [Del]

Go to your local library or a university library. They should have books on scriptwriting.
