My friend and I are making a robot for the 2012 games, and I was wondering if any of you are going to compete, or maybe have already competed and could share a few pointers?

Our idea is roughly this (although I won't disclose the fine details):

Movement:
4 wheels, 2 wheel drive, although we will have 6-8 motors set up so we can switch the type of drive when needed, forward or rear, or move up into 4 wheel drive

Weapons:
2 blades, each with their own set of manual controls (auto controls might be added)
A pneumatic weapon, probably hydraulic
And a flamethrower

The blades will be angled slightly, so depending on which way we have them spin they will either throw or pull in the opposing bot.
All that I will say about the pneumatic weapon is that is a flipper of sort >:)
The Flamer thrower will probably be a basic model

I figure I will use aluminum for the frame, throw on some composite armor, have 2 batteries-each powering a separate system on the bot (the bow will have the ability to switch loads from one to the other, in case one gets damaged)

This is all for the 60lb limit.

If at all possible I would like to hear what you guys think about our overall plan, I welcome constructive criticism.

the blades could rly go either way, just depends how they are going to be done

the pnematic/hydrolic wep could also go both ways, depending on how you do it it could be a great wep or just about compltly useless

what i WOULD suggest is ( ive put a bit of free thought into best possible bots myself) :

making sure there are NO bits opposing bots could grab on to

having some kind of method to immobilize the enemy bot, perhaps after flipping it hav a pnematic/hydrolic "claw" flip down onto it holding it down while the flamethrower/ blades go to work on it

make sure the armor covers the wheels in such a way that NOTHING can get to them

make something to specificlly target the enemy bots wheels

make sure you dont have ALL your offensive capabuilities on one side, even if its only a single saw blade at the back make sure theres something to "deter" enemy bots from running up behind you

if you do make something to immobilize enemy bots perhaps have some kind of drill attachment with a RLY long drill bit (like a foot or so )so that way once held still you can just ram a drill bit into the main guts of the enemy robot

uh. thats because the most unnecessary stuff is on main & missions, we are trying to clutter stuff down. that doesnt happen as m uch on these boards.
