I've used it before it was kinda fun, I have a couple friends who have used it and one of them is really into it, he has a couple things he has been working but he's a creature artist and making them 3-D really worked for him. If I can I'll show some of his stuff off.

Blender rocks. My younger brother uses it. Using the newer stuff like luxrender and cycles and a bit of common blender knowledge/training, you can create stuff that looks like it's a photograph of reality.

DesignCourse from Youtube has great tutorials for beginners to advanced. I learned a lot from him. After couple of videos i did this one myself. Note that uploaded version of image has loads of compression and thats why can have some odd artifacts or noise.
