About BBS systems.... (14)

I heard somewhere before that BBS and Forums are different.
Can someone explain the differences between the two systems? Which one is easier to build/maintain?
How hard/costly is it to make something with a setup similar to this?
Are there any good free ones?

(( sorry for the bombardment of questions.... I'm interested in making a private board for my friends and I, but have no idea where to start, or if it's even possible. x_x;; ))

BBS stands for Bulletin Board System. It's a set up like this, or 4chan - Only the most recent posts, or "bullets" will be shown. Generally editing a post is not possible.

Forums are... well, Forums. You have your threads, and each post is editable with signatures and the like. BBS is just a more utilitarian Forum, to be honest - Less fancy things, more function.

As for how hard? Not very. There are a ton of websites which will let you grab a pre-made forum (or even a BBS, I believe) and just run with it from there. Like Invisionfree, or Zetaboards or something. So it is essentially free and simple.

If you want to -make- a board, then you'd do better to just learn basic website coding first. Once you understand the basics, getting the rest is just a matter of spending time typing it all in, and then paying money to host it somewhere (like your own personal site domain).

Hope this helped.

Okay, so... I've tried Googling on BBS.... And.... I keep getting things talking about "Telnet".... What is this, and am I looking at something different than what this is here?

Looking for something like this site's design, but... Is it free, or would I have to pay for webhosting or something??

Hosting your own server costs money, yes, but if you find a free web host, at the cost of your own unique URL and ad space you don't have to pay anything.

How you host it or whether or not you have to pay is separate from how it looks and the coding behind it. If your web host is just to host a forum, then you can only have a forum. If it hosts BBS-style sites, then you can only have a BBS. If it supports any sort of code, as long as you have the code for it, you can make it either one you want.

This site's design was made by Reltair, if I am not mistaken, and he pays for it like a normal server. Again, the only different between paying for it and getting a free server is ad space and flexibility.
