Kendo (10)

1 Name: Jo : 2018-01-15 23:11 ID:cjz37Ij/ [Del]

Ive always hated the tiny little toothpicks fencers use, but i also want to learn to use a sword. Kendo seems like a good option. Unfortunately, i live in Tennessee, so there are pretty much no places i can learn it here. Any suggestions?

>>1 I live in England and I have a similar problem as there is a Kendo school/club but it's like in Bristol so it's kind too far out from where I live, but I have my Tae kwon-do so I can't complain too much.

If you are looking for sword stuff maybe look up a place that may do long swords because that's meant to be kind of a big thing in some places.

the swords in fencing might be light weight, but it's actually quite fun to do. I've been taught both traditional kendo and sabre fencing and they're pretty different, but once you get the hang of it, fencing is just as exciting

>>4 I would look into kenjutsu, kendo is very formal and is more on the sport side then the martial arts side,

It's great that u want to learn kendo! I myself am a kendoka. Like what jaydon said, kendo is a sport, so there are many rules involved, but is infused with tradition since it's derived from kenjutsu. Kenjutsu means 'the art of the sword', focusing on eliminating an opponent in a combat. Like many Japanese martial arts, Kendo ends with a 'do''道'.Kendo means 'the way of the sword', developing your skill and spirit. Students of kenjutsu rarely spar, even with bokuto (wooden katana). They train kata and choreographed attacks; beautiful swordplay nonetheless. However, finding a kenjutsu school outside of Japan is almost impossible...one even has to take a blood oath before they can learn the ancient art. :p

Is historical european martial arts (HEMA) popular in USA? If u don't like fencing, maybe u could give HEMA a try? They train with armour and longswords and more! Good luck!
