One of my goals in life is to learn kendo. I think swordsmanship would be a great skill in life, along with capoeira.

One thing I really want to try out, but since there are no dojos here, can only dream.

I think that by the time I'll get the chance I'll be too old or something. Are there dojos where people in their late teens/early tweens can learn?

34 Name: Kensen : 2013-01-02 14:35 ID:oIiCtTQ3 [Del]

Reviving this thread I've practice Kendo for quite some time now and love it. It's not as expensive to start practicing at a dojo reason being I'm pretty sure the auskf here in the states, regulate that all sensei must be voluntary. Or at least I'm aware that all 6 of my sensei don't get paid lol. Monthly rates are only for facility purposes. I am aware Bogu is quite expensive my set cost me about 500, Keikogi and Hakama can range from 60-200 shinai can cost anywhere between 20-45. Truly just to start the martial art you only need a shinai you really do need bogu until you learn the proper way to strike, my sensei didn't tell me to get bogu until 5-6 months of instilling the basics in me. so have patience with it and if you have any questions regarding the martial art feel free to ask I'll hopefully be able to give you a proper answer

35 Name: Kensen : 2013-01-02 14:36 ID:oIiCtTQ3 [Del]

don't need bogu*

36 Name: arka !chvok4/SZI : 2013-01-08 11:51 ID:hgqZ6fao [Del]

What did you start with? What did you learn first?

37 Name: Kensen : 2013-01-08 17:45 ID:oIiCtTQ3 [Del]

Rei-Gi(etiquette)of course:)
http://kenshi247.net/blog/2012/10/24/small-things/

Tenouchi(grip)
http://kenshi247.net/blog/2012/01/14/tenouchi-for-men-cutting/

Ashi-Sabaki(footwork)
http://www.kendo-guide.com/footwork.html

When you get the finer understanding of those three I would start in with metsuke
http://www.kendo-guide.com/wisdom_kan_ken_metsuke.html

then maybe start in to suburi(training)
the way we start our practice at my dojo is with the following

1. Kyotsuke (kyo-tsu-ke) - Attention.
2. Rei - Bow.
3. Nuketo (nu-ke-to) or Batto (ba-tto) - Draw the sword/shinai.
4. Joge-buri Naname-buri (jo-ge-bu-ri na-na-me-bu-ri) 20 x - Full swing motion strikes, first 10 are shomen and second 10 are sayumen strikes. (Counting: ichi, ni, san, shi, go...) "Jo" = high, "ge" = low, "buri" = strike/swing, "naname" = diagonal
5. Yon-kyudo-men (yon-kyu-do-men) 20 x - Four step men strike. (Counting: ichi-men-san-shi, ni-men-san-shi, san-men-san-shi, and so on)
6. Mae-ushiro-shomen-uchi Mae-ushiro-sayumen-uchi (ma-e-u-shi-ro-sho-men-uchi, ma-e-u-shi-ro-sa-yu-men-uchi) 20 x - First 10 are shomen and second 10 are sayumen strikes. (Counting: ichi-ni-san-shi, go...) "Mae" = front, "ushiro" = back , "uchi" = strike
7. Haya-suburi Go-ju-ka-i (ha-ya-su-bu-ri) 50 x - Fast(jumping) men strikes. (Counting: ichi-ni-san-shi, go...) "Haya" = fast, "suburi" = strike/swing
8. Shin-ko-kyu 3 x - Deep breathing exercise. (Counting: ichi, ni, san, si, ichi, ni, san, shi, ich, ni, san, shi)
9. Sonkyo.
10. Osameto (O-sa-me-to) - Sword/shinai back to the saya/taito position.
11. Rei. - Bow

The best way though ultimately is to find a good Sensei if you live in the states I might be able to point you in the right direction of a dojo. Also for all the suburi training drills you can youtube how to preform them properly it's alot easier to see it then to explain via typing. If you would like i can always post some links to them as well. You can also get shinai
at these website which is all you really need to begin

http://www.e-mudo.com/kendo_shinai_bamboo_sword_s/4.htm
http://www.e-bogu.com/Shinai-Kendo-Bamboo-Sword-s/18.htm
http://www.e-bogu.com/Shinai-Kendo-Bamboo-Sword-s/18.htm

Just make sure its 39 for males and i believe it needs to be 38 for females.(It doesn't hurt for women to use a 39 and switch over to a 38 for taikai;))

My long-distance eyesight is really weak and I have to wear glasses. Will that effect practicing kendo?

46 Name: Kensen : 2013-01-19 18:06 ID:oIiCtTQ3 [Del]

nope so do I, but I do wear contacts during practice some fellow kenshi either use sports frames which they sale I'll attack a link to some below. They also go with out since your relatively close to your opponent and you can gauge your distance and the intent of your opponent with the tip of your shinai.

55 Name: M : 2015-02-25 12:44 ID:YhViUSup [Del]

I've always wanted to try kendo but it costs quite a bit of money for a good set of equipment and the closest dojo is over an hour drive away. I would like to join a dojo if given the opportunity.

I'm well born in a southern family I like to say we have guns to spare and swords to sharpen and a nation to protect. Yeah some people think that the sport is stupid or for nerds and that's when I respond. Try spending a hole day in hot heavy chain armor and get hit a few times with a German great sword or two and than you get to say what they think hahaha

61 Name: 亜利沙!8NBuQ4l6uQ : 2015-03-12 02:58 ID:cSon0/jc [Del]

I wanna try this too!! I'm a frustrated samurai!! I'm pretty much satisfied with just playing video game Samurai Warriors as a way to try this sport.. >.<

62 Name: Zeno : 2015-03-16 22:35 ID:cry/bV6v [Del]

I've been doing Kendo for 17 years. Still love it to to the point where I've tried to get other people at work to take it up. Possibly one of the greatest way to exercise. For me atleast. xD

I LUV Kendooo. best wooden sword sports ever!

66 Name: SEOSHI : 2015-03-19 13:29 ID:ks3cc937 [Del]

I tried Kendo but it doesn't seem that, you know, if used in the real world, it would be.....kinda....useless? Ish?
Like, would I really just step and slide all the way to the front and back odd myopponent?

But besides that, the swing of a kendo practitioner is top notch. With one arm, most guys that I know would devastate anyone who got in their way.
