Oh and tell me how it is

3 Name: SilentNight : 2011-07-18 10:29 ID:geFk1HrA [Del]

hey lee, i did aikido and sanda (chinese freestyle boxing). as for my style, i like to mix everything togheter but my xore would be aikido. aikido, as u probably know, is very theorical and some say it lacks realistic application, so i did sanda to get that realisitic situation. so wat about u?

4 Name: Fenrir : 2011-07-19 21:37 ID:1aewHiza [Del]

Nope! I learn on my own. I use my body and weapons.

5 Name: Seven : 2011-07-20 04:47 ID:2rkR1rvV [Del]

I did about 2 months of Kenpo. Other than that, I've pretty much learned through watching other people do it and actually participating in fights and sparring matches.

6 Name: SilentNight : 2011-07-20 21:43 ID:geFk1HrA [Del]

Fenrir, u sound like a street fighter to me XD

8 Name: Theren Leofivra : 2011-07-23 05:05 ID:vFr8RyTr [Del]

9 Name: Cactus : 2011-07-23 08:12 ID:I8dSs1tM [Del]

Muay thai :D
I'm weird about other martial arts though, I'm not really a fan of most of them.
I'm a fan of krav maga, systema, bjj, muay thai and boxing (kinda a martial art...but it's debatable) They're all useful for real life situations, any other martial art I'm not keen on.
Sadly I haven't tried krav maga or systema, the nearest class to me you have to be 18+ to join (that's how... brutal it is, apparently... :|)
Anyway, I really like muay thai (the straightforwardness of it) I took judo once and found it incredibly slow... I prefer martial arts to be "to the point"

10 Name: Suishō no tsubasa : 2011-07-24 09:44 ID:ifabVjLa [Del]

I did about 8 to 10 years of Tae Kwon Do, it's realy a good way to improve you physical abilities like balance and stamina.

11 Name: Sakura : 2011-07-24 10:26 ID:KXP7ahlR [Del]

I've just started to learn wushu. Man, it's tiring.
(Hey, btw is wushu called kungfu as well? Papa likes to assume them the same)

12 Name: Marinka-xhanx3 : 2011-07-24 19:33 ID:3V33ChU/ [Del]

karate..but i don't go to the class anymore...had 2 quit

13 Name: SilentNight : 2011-07-25 21:43 ID:IUFtvEDB [Del]

so what makes you guys think a style is good? somethings that can be learnt and put into action fast or something more slow and ancient like kungfu or aikido?

14 Name: Misuto!M4ZBq07Cs. : 2011-07-26 14:36 ID:ny5Fit+h [Del]

I used to take taekwondo. It wasn't anything hardcore, and in fact it was mostly just a way to work out on a regular basis. It may have just been what we were learning, but I can't say I can use many things I learned there in practical application.

I mean, spin kicks? Let's be realistic here.

Since then I haven't had much time to take up another style, so I just worked out in general. This may be the wrong way to think about it, but I find restricting yourself to a style isn't as effective as improvising based on the situation, unless you're just that devoted to your style. At least until you have the basics covered (actual physical strength, stamina, agility) I don't think one should realistically rely completely on a martial art for self defense.

Of course I may be completely wrong, and technique alone could subvert one's lack of physical fitness, but I'd like to think any skill I've gained has been from working out and not just the theory behind it.

I'm still very much interested in martial arts styles nonetheless, since they are very effective when applied right - and often, there are great explanations on how each of them work.

>>13 I believe the most efficient one is the best. Crazy stunts and flip kicks are only good in the most particular of situations. Or movies, in which case they are the coolest thing because why not.

Have you ever watched Ip-Man, or seen wing chun in action? It's a style that doesn't involve a lot of unnecessary movement, and it's extremely effective. Because they don't have to focus a whole lot of energy into being flashy it seems, those who use it tend to be extremely fast with seemingly minimal effort. To me that's the ideal martial art.

And just as a kicker, Bruce Lee was a practitioner of wing chun. So it gets awesome points on top of everything else.

15 Name: SilentNight : 2011-07-27 11:45 ID:yeyOyJiI [Del]

wing chun has been such a controversal style. personnally i know 2 guys whose done wing chun, one of them is "godly", the other one simply sucks... i guess when it comes down to it, all styles are good, they just depend on the user.

but didn't bruce lee did jeet kun do too?

16 Name: Cactus : 2011-07-28 06:38 ID:mZZQDJvZ [Del]

>>14 I don't think that wing chun is very effective, compared to western styles.
Wing chun was used in China where most people were training a similar style, or wing chun itself. It wasn't crafted to work against western styles, like boxing.
Nor was boxing crafted to work against eastern styles, like kung fu.
Of course Bruce Lee comes along trying to make everything look good (I'm not a fan of his. He was an actor, not a martial artist, in my view.)

I might be wrong, I don't know much about wing chun. I know that it is... slightly different to kung fu, a different variation of it.

Moving on to kung fu - I have a lot against it in general. I've trained a bit in shaolin kung fu. Most of it is flashy. Or at least, that's how it seems from my perspective.
What is the point of going into a horse stance, or a drop stance (that really kills your knees...) when a boxer, or more likely - a kick boxer, will just kick you, before you can even balance properly. I think even a street fighter, with no martial arts training - will have the brains to do that.
You might argue that you can get into a horse stance fast, and can defend and attack fast - but it's generally quicker for someone to just... well, kick.

It might work perfectly against similar styles, or against itself... But when it comes to the effectiveness of martial arts, it depends on what matches what.
Many people that train in kung fu, spar against other kung fu practitioners. They don't really adapt to all styles. But that's fine for the people who go into it for the competition.

Of course, like SilentNight said. It definitely depends on the user. I'm just generalizing :D
By the way, >>15 Bruce Lee did Jeet Kun Do, he invented it, I think...

17 Name: SilentNight : 2011-07-29 13:20 ID:EAzRKG+z [Del]

for the way i see it, every style has its weakness and strength, it's just like a rock/paper/sissor game

18 Name: TransitiveVerb : 2011-07-29 21:18 ID:GsZQQjo4 [Del]

>16 Ok, only read a few things from the overview.

Bruce Lee was a martial artist studying under the Yip Man, who was a Grand Master of the Wing Chun style at the time. The Yip Man himself was famous as a proficient Martial Artist. The reason you can even study Martial Arts in the West (of Asian origin) is because Bruce Lee both popularized it in the West and fought against the stigma of giving foreigners their fighting techniques that his own people harbored.

It seems you were never taught the combat aspects of the forms you were learning. Each on of those movements, when practiced to the point where you can do the movements without thinking, becomes a part of you. When you spar, they teach you how to take those movements and make your opponent less willing to continue fighting. I practiced Hung Gar Kung Fu. The style is known for its...less than friendly applications. Chinese martial arts use those "flashy" forms as a way of training your muscle memory, gaining stamina, and teaching you the history of the style. Part of that history is thousands of years of bloody, to the death, conflict. The styles survived because they taught a combatant how to survive a fight. Why do you think its called a Martial Art? The name refers to its origin as a system of training for fighting/killing other people. Also, no one fights from horse stance. That's there to strengthen your body, and provide a convenient invisible chair for your to sit on should you need it. People who have one sparring match trying that learn very quickly that you don't do that.

In Wing Chun, and many other Martial arts, the idea of simultaneous block/attack is present. In Wing Chun, it is the position of the knees and elbows in the center-line that keep an opponent from being able to assault vital organs. In Hung Gar, we do more force v. force blocking. In Wushu, they re-direct the force of an opponent away from themselves, using their opponent to defeat him/herself. There are also differences between internal (redirection of force) and external (hard) style as to which approach to use for what situation.

What you put into training is what you get out. If you hap-hazardly do the forms without correcting your stance, without understanding the tension or snap a move should have, or listening to your instructor, you won't get much out of it. Do so, and you'll find when someone throws a haymaker, you have many interesting options to choose from.

Though this was focused more on Eastern Martial Arts, lets not forget that the West has plenty of its own Martial Arts. (Protip: Humans love fighting) Savat(sic?), Krav Magna, Wrestling (The real kind, not WWE), Celtic Brawling, etc. These systems arise because they helped someone stay alive in a fight. That alone is already a good endorsement. Newer arts I'm kinda leery of. Give me an art that came from a time of conflict and I'll show you something that is applicable today in a fight.

>>18 I'm still not keen on kung fu. Partly because nowadays - hardly anyone fights like that. We all fight dirty - in real fights, anyway.

People overthink about fights when they are really simple.
From what I found of kung fu (I've trained in some lau gar too...) You mainly fight low, or on your knees. In street fights, it's all about the punches, haymakers, lazy hooks, dirty tricks and swinging your arms about wildly.
And to go into a drop stance in a street fight? I'm sorry, but I don't think that would work at all - no matter how much you practice it.
Maybe it works in competition fighting... and it's a great form of fitness. It might win you some fights. I'm just saying that it's not perfect, and it's not as good as it's hyped up to be.

This is of course my personal opinion, I'm not saying that Kung Fu is bullshit, I'm saying that I believe it is. Probably because I tried it, and I wasn't keen on it, personally. Like I mentioned, I like martial arts that are to the point.

Also, I probably sound strange talking about street fights. I do of course mean the common school brawls, pub confrontations and being mugged - not the kind you see in movies, which hardly ever happen.

21 Name: Misuto!M4ZBq07Cs. : 2011-07-30 16:21 ID:ny5Fit+h [Del]

It's something that takes years of practice and dedication until it's worth using. Of course it's not going to do shit if you weren't into it in the first place. Swinging wildly in a normal street brawl leaves so many openings it's not even funny, but of course if the opponent has no experience in a fighting style it's still an equal match. When kung fu and karate gets practical and simplified, it's extremely efficient in doing a lot with little unnecessary movement.

Of course, to get you into it in the first place, they show you flashy bullshit that won't get anything done.

The best thing any martial art can teach you is how the body works in a fight and how to apply it naturally. What's the most efficient way to strike (karate)? If someone grabs you, how do you turn the tables (wrestling)? If they're just swinging at you wildly, where is the opening (kung fu)? Of course none of those need to conform to a specific style, which is why I said I'm not sure sticking to only one style of martial art, western or eastern, is a good idea. It just restricts your movements and gives you less options, unless you're just that dedicated.

22 Name: Nick : 2011-07-31 11:17 ID:aII/1eeQ [Del]

If you like Martial arts you should read the Bruce lee book Tao of jeet kun do. You dont have to follow the fighting style, there are useful things to learn about martial arts. Its not a how to fight book. Its better if you already take martial arts then read the book.

23 Name: SilentNight : 2011-07-31 15:00 ID:EAzRKG+z [Del]

I really like bruce lee's philosophy too, take what you think is useful and reject what you think is useless. but then again, if everyone did that there would be a million styles wouldn't it?

24 Name: Solomon12 : 2011-08-06 23:01 ID:l0K4Ybeh [Del]

So many people simply say kung fu, but really kung fu has many types, Wing Chun, is one of them. I've practiced many types, and as Misuto said, Kung Fu's and all martial arts styles are practical for certain situations. You just need the skill and experience to know when to use the style, When to turn the tides on a tackler whose way bigger then you?(wrestling, Judo, Swaijiao) How and where to hit an opponent to make the most of it (Kung Fu, Boxing, Karate, etc.) I've been practicing many styles of Kung Fu and Martial Arts since three, so I know that there is always a when, where, how, what, and why to use a specific style. Wing Chun's usefullness, for me is when dealing with someone whose slower to respond, as Wing Chun's strength lies in its reflex, sensitivity, and quickness. The Wing Chun Fighter will usually shoot in quickly, and stick close to the opponents body, by doing so, he can read and predict movements by touch sensitivity, and since hes already so close, the moment he finds an opening, he strikes. The worst situation to use Wing Chun is when you fight someone whose a trickster, and fakes a lot of movements, using many feints, and also against someone who does not move toward you, but chooses to lay back away, because the farther away an opponent, the harder it is to read, and predict.

Not sure if you would consider it a fighting style but I've been boxing for around 2 years now. Still amateur and I really don't plan to go any further (I'm more focused in my classes).

I did Tae Kwon Do, sorry if I butchered the spelling, and I plan to get back into it just because I miss it.

What a coincidence, I was just about to create a thread on this. I don't actually formally take classes, but I study techniques from TKD, BJJ, Muay Thai, Kyokushin Karate, Boxing etc. I don't consider MMA a style of fighting, just saying...

48 Name: Solomon12 : 2011-09-04 17:17 ID:l0K4Ybeh [Del]

>>47 depends on the use of MMA, if it is being used and limited by rules in a cage fight, like UFC, then its not a fighting style but a combat sport, real MMA used outside of the cage for practical self defense is a fighting style.

>>48 I suppose you have a point. Although I can't shake my opinion that It's based on pure brute force. No technique involved. But a lot of the older Eastern martial arts sacrifice technique for practicality. *Sigh*

50 Name: Solomon12 : 2011-09-05 00:26 ID:l0K4Ybeh [Del]

>>49MMA is brutal, but technique is not sacrificed, that is if you are looking at a good MMA fighter. MMA refers to mixed martial arts, and thus many techniques and concepts are melted together, this melting makes it look messy and disorganized but in reality its much more powerful than basic unrefined concepts and techniques in traditional martial arts. MMA takes complete concepts and techniques and bring them to whole new dimensions by blending other useful concepts and removing unnecessary stuff. It looks like a mess, but its very effective. Also, some old eastern martial arts do not sacrifice technique for practicality, but instead use technique FOR practicality. For example Wing Chun uses linear attack and close range elbow strikes, and sticking to your opponent at all times as a technique or concept, and its very practical because the fastest way to get from point A to point B is a straight line.

51 Name: Germany : 2011-09-05 00:41 ID:JRLk9jfC [Del]

>>50 You raise an interesting argument, and I suppose you're right on SOME counts. From all the videos I've seen in addition to other data compiled, MMA just seems like brawling. A well trained boxer could easily take one of the toughest UFC fighters. I believe it boils down to discipline.

Eventually, I'd like to also learn Baguazhang, and even though it's not a martial art, gymnastics.

Turtle style is a sub-style that allows for better defence against grappling esp. on the ground. it relies heavily on abdominal strength. one trains by alot of sit-ups esp. with weights but when you are advaned you train with a partner who tries to keep you on the ground while you are doing sit ups. while fighting in this style your hand are always in the sit-up position, tucked behind your head. it is a heavily defensive style. but you can still attack using elbows and headbutts, where you elbow to the head and headbutt upward to the nose or temple.

One day, after 4 yrs of this, I've developed a martial arts style out of it, I call it clerk-fu. The concept is pretty much Karate kid "wax on, wax off" thing, but it made me more fit and quick than I've ever been.

>>86 What's embarrassing about that? On some level, practitioners of martial arts are aspiring towards some model, if only as a reference. Though I'll admit, Jackie Chan is a silly guy, if you've really seen him in action (be it his newer movies, or one of his badass older ones like Drunken Master), it isn't a silly thing to aspire to at all.

I don't mean to offend for anyone that abhors wannabe martial artists that use this goal as their ONLY driving force for learning. That's bullshit. I meant to say, even the most skilled martial artists have someone to follow the example of, be it a master or a more famous martial artist.

ok i know this is off subject but i gotta ask.....
if you get cornered by some jackoff and they say there gona beat YOU up is it just me that wont give them the chance to strike or would you be with me on this in the fact that when your well being is threatened or your about to be robbed...... you give it every thing you got till there aint nothin to give(and by the way im not a violent person but when someone fucks with me my friends or my family in a physical way I BREAK THEM!)

ive allways gone by three rules.....

1 your eyes are your best weapon
ya know look like a person and not a victim.
2 they are just as afraid of YOU!
it is true trust me..... if someone says there gona hit ya STAND UP and face them head on and question there motives
3 and if all else fails STRIKE!
if there still in your face and talking hasn't helped..... well ya know...... (in truth fighting is a last resort but the fear that people get when fighting is what keeps us in the right because the person staring the conflict normally over estimates there own strength and ARE NOT scared and a cop will tell ya that the difference between a good guy and a bad guy with his fist or his gun is the justifiable fear that you could be hurt)

>>98 Yeah, I've learned what the applications are for a few of the movements, but I haven't practiced them, it's just information in my head for now.

Just three years???? I've read that it took Yang LuChan like, 18 years to become a competent fighter (and ohhh boy was he competent). But maybe that's because it was taijiquan, and the internal stuff takes quite a long time from what I've read.

100 Name: Sejin !PKt//nzxc2 : 2011-09-29 23:56 ID:9zpJnmYz [Del]

On a slightly different note (but still martial arts related), does anyone know of any skilled, credible authors of books or DVDs on taijiquan or qigong? I've got a few books by Jou, Tsung Hwa. I have a book called 'The Power of Internal Martial Arts and Chi' by Bruce Frantzis. That one is more just information (and there's a TON of it), but he seems really, really knowledgeable, so I'm considering getting other books by him. I also have a few books and DVDs by Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming (he's my personal taijiquan and qigong idol lol) and I have a Microsoft Word document with a list of other books and DVDs that I want to get eventually (mostly by just him) that's like, a page long lol. Just letting you know what I have so as to avoid people saying names of authors who I already know about.

>>100 I don't know of any books, but learning from an actual instructor is best. Its always better to have someone there to give advice and good criticism. Also, It is true the internal styles take longer to understand, but to understand at least some of the movements takes about three years. 10+ years to be CLOSE to perfecting the movements. Its pretty much impossible to perfect and master the martial arts within ones life, you can only get close to perfection.

>>101 I do have an instructor for taijiquan, but not qigong. I think it's good to learn from a variety of different formats and sources because different teachers (in my case, through books and DVDs) may have more knowledge about something or a different way of explaining it that makes more sense. Also, in the case of instructors who are sometimes difficult for me to understand due to English not being their first language (like mine can be), a book by someone knowledgeable that is clearly written can be very helpful.

Low ammounts to no meat, no leeks, garlic, or mushrooms. Try the diet, if it doesn't work for you, you can still practice hing gung, but it'll be tougher to get the results. The reason for the diet is simply because those foods mentioned scatter the chi in ones body and makes it harder to develop skill, when using hing gung, the most important thing is to have your chi sink below the dan tien to your legs.

Taekwondo does seem to be quite famous. In my own opinion, I think its more effective sporting wise than basic self defense. Although I have seen many Taekwondo practitioners that are quite formidable in self defense. Then again, I seem to find those with the ability to properly defend themselves with nothing but Taekwondo to be from older schools of the fighting style. There seems to be a changing focus now for many Taekwondo schools from a Lethal fighting system into a sport.

>>182 Yes, Tai-Chi is a fighting art. Most of the applications are actually close range joint-locks and standing grappling, or can be interpreted as strikes using the wrist. Just because you aren't making a fist, it doesn't mean that it isn't a strike. Practicing slow is meant to improve relaxation and help with proper posture for body mechanics. I personally do traditional Yang style Tai-Chi.

>>183 Chen style is also practiced slow, but with bursts of speed and power at certain points. It's applications are more aggressive than Yang style, though. And Xing Yi Quan is more linear, usually using only slight angles to advance onto the opponent.

I practice an interesting mix of Judo, Aikido, Hawaiian Lua, Ba Gua, Tai Chi, and a few Tae Kwon Do techniques I picked up from sparing with a friend. Since I'm not physically very strong, I focus of moves that use my opponent's energy and momentum against them. Other than that, I study pressure points and other alternatives to pure power. I moved twice more since then and started again this past August. I'm up to an advanced green (my teacher let me test quicker than usual due to past experience). It's a lot of fun. Do any of you practice with weapons? If so, which ones? And which are your favorites?

I've been trained to use short sticks, Staffs, Kwan Dao, Chinese broadswords (Dao), Chinese straight swords (Jian), nunchuks, Sais, chain whips, spears, daggers, and Hook Swords. I can't really decide on which is my favorite, but the decision is between twin hooks and a chain whip.

Also, if you're less than 13 years old, there's a good chance your teacher will lower the bar substantially. Add that to lack of comprehension, as well as multiple other conflicting arts, and what you have is just a mess.

You have to master one to start another. In other words it's more effective to master one art than have a basic knowledge of 3 arts. Quality of quantity every time.

I do Ju-jitsu, it's a very defensive style; you wait for the person to attack you before basically countering it. Sometimes at the club I go to we also learn about the history behind the move (how it used to be executed to deal serious damage) and other martial arts so we can understand how they are connected.

Boxing is a combat sport.
Basically if it was designed or is taught based on a set of rules for the sole purpose of competing it is a sport.
No Asian based arts are not the only Martial Arts out there, but that still does not make boxing anything more than a sport.

>>323 Technically, boxing is a martial art, because it is combat related. Hence the word "martial", which relates to anything related to war, battle, combat, etc. A martial art presents movements of combat in an artistic, or scientific format. A martial artist studies the meaning behind every small movement within every technique, and tries to perfect such movements. Much like a scientist trying to improve his theory, or an artist trying to master the use of paint and refined brushstrokes. Therefore, a boxer who constantly tries to perfect his footwork, jabs, hooks, etc. is a martial artist.

While I used to as a little kid do some Tae Kwon Do I haven't had much training after that. However I do plan to look into learning perhaps some forms of Kung Fu. Mainly Wing Chun. I want to learn JKD however it's not easily taught and can vary for each person therefore I would want to study it mostly on my own. And I of course want weapons training mostly in Kendo but more specifically in the art of the dual sword. While this may seem like just hopes I plan to make it real. Anyway it's nice to see so many are interested in martial arts. "Fixation is the path to death, fluidity is the path to life" - Musashi Miyamoto. "Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a tea pot it becomes the tea pot. Now water can flow or creep or drip or crash. Be water my friend." -Bruce Lee. Keep moving, keep training. Never stop. Flowing water never grows stale. XD

I used to do Tang Su Do before we couldn't afford the classes. Bruce Lee also did Tang Su Do. I was a yellow belt but shoulda been an orange belt. The teacher was a cheap skate. He had "affordable lesson plans" yeah it didn't matter if you could pass the test he had final say if you got the next belt or not. The more you paid the quicker you got your belt. So that way he got the same amount of money from everyone in the end. I would like to try to pick it up again. I would also like to study Wing Chun. Hey there! I practice Wushu (Chinese martial arts) to be more exact kung-fu, i entered a competition in Spain a month ago and presented to 2 categories (from 14-18) and got gold in long weapons and silver in short weapons, because the referees where bought because some of them were teachers who presented their students.
I'm looking forward to start learning something about dual kan-dao, just because it's the type of weapon Archer(Fate/Stay Night) uses, he uses gan jiang and mo ye.

That doesn't make your statement any clearer. Wushu and Kung-Fu are interchangeable, both referring to Chinese martial arts. There are several different styles of Kung-Fu, though, such as Wing Chun, Hung Gar, Chow Gar, Shaolin, Tai-Chi, etc. All of these styles are considered Kung-Fu/Wushu. Which style do you practice?

ah... i said Kung-Fu so anyone can understand, but it's my fault because i didn't express it well.
And answering the question, i don't practice an specific style, my work depends on what i need at the moment, but right now my main work consist on learning traditional forms (of any style) and a little bit of Quinna and aplications. Also i will start with Sanda, but i think i year or two, right now it's not my priority.
Now i'm learning a form of wudang sword and a dragon form i don't know the name of -.-', and recently i finished a double melon hammers form (i hope that is the translation to English), shaolin monk spade(which i liked a lot) and a Dadao form. I think the teacher mentioned something about sword fighting for the next class but i don't remember xD, i just want to finish with these forms so i can start soon with the double kan daos and the rope dart(this one seems to be aweome!). As you can see i have a great obsession with weapons xD,
I hope that answered your question, i'm not used to speaking in English about topics like these so i tried to make a good explanation though it wasn't what i really wanted to say... anyway, what about you? ^^

If you're learning from a teacher, he probably teaches a certain system. For example, I practice traditional Shaolin, everything that was taught in the temple before its destruction. Shaolin consists of many different styles, such as Tiger, Dragon, Praying Mantis, Drunken fist, and others, but it is all taught within Shaolin. Shaolin is the system, and each style within has its own forms. Think of it like a University with many different colleges. Anyway, aside from that I also practice the three main internal styles, Xing Yi Quan, Tai Chi Quan, and Baguazheng.

It's pretty straightforward . Nothing too fancy...except if you go to the part where you have to use sticks and swords (but that's called Arnis already) where arcs are the key.

I also do Tai Chi to calm my nerves every morning :3

Hey I've kinda been fighting like a street rat my whole life but never had practical training. I was wondering if there were any basic straight to the point martial arts? I didn't read the entire thread but please list your recommendations below.

PS: I'm in shape but not good with technical stuff please offer your favorite suggestion for a beginner martial artist. Thanks

>>384
Dont worry about "technical stuff" as in any martial art you just laern it over time i,e they wont bombard you with everything at once, if they did/do they are only doing themselves a disservice.

Its all ways a good idea befor you start any martial art to also check out who ever the instructor is i,e if they have a websit, and if you know anyone that is allready training it with them.

I have a question, if anyone can answer..
What is the most effective way to train martial arts?
(example; self-train, find a partner, etc?)

390 Name: Solomon12 : 2013-06-10 22:13 ID:z7W5uW/5 [Del]

>>389 Depends on what you are working on. Training for combat requires sparring, which you need a partner for. If you are conditioning, and training forms, katas, sets, etc., self train with an experienced instructor on site.

I was born into family of martial artists with martial artists friends lol. Shotokan and TKD were my base styles. Since I was little, I've been self training in styles ranging from JKD to Tiger Claw and the like. I like to call myself a free flow or a freestyle martial artist because I never quite use just one style. I like to equip what I've learned from the styles I've trained in that I fine useful and practical and discard what I don't---like Bruce Lee.

I focus quite heavily on the spiritual side of martial arts as I feel that that's something left out or watered down within the western culture of martial arts. I train myself to understand the potential of my ki and aura daily through meditation and other means. Reiki, a healing art using energy, is a big help to me as well.

I train every second I can. I'm like Goku and Gohan mixed; I train and eat like crazy, wanting to spar or take on challenges all the time....Yet I also keep up with my studies and hold my friends close me, exploding in an emotional rage of something happens to them. It's funny, really. But I'm off topic now.

All in all, I love martial arts. And it will be a part of me and my family for generations to come.

Whew....sorry about the long post >__<

Whats with all the TKD people here its something you teach children but not a martial art that is really usefull, just like some forms of karate. they try to act all fancy and in the end its just a wast of time. Real martial arts like brazilian jui jistu, Muay Thai, wing chung, and boxing is what you should really use in a fight. by the way i do Muay Thai and brazilian jui jistu.

I've studied the Korean martial art of tang soo do under a very strict and very skilled master. Eventually I earned my black belt and realized I'd already learned everything that applied to real self defense. From there things got fancy and showy not truly effective. I continued attending the self defense and sparring classes but began exploring Muay Thai, Jujitsu, Kenpo, Karate, Kempo, Weapon arts (primarily for fun and stunt work) along with Eskrima, Savate, Krav Maga, Pankration, Pradal Serey, Silat, and Bokotor. My fighting style is just a strange personal mix of all these martial arts that I learned either in actual classes or in month long seminars that I found through the martial arts community, or in quite a few cases from instructional books or tv shows ("human weapon" guys. If you're interested in picking up some interesting techniques and are already a reasonably skilled martial artist it's a gold mine)

Six Degrees is the more refined of the two, and is the style that i start with in an 'official' fight. I start at the '6th Degree', and the more I'm being pressed back(the more I'm losing, etc.), then I move to a the next degree down. Each time I go a degree lower my style becomes more direct, focusing more on damaging the opponent/attacker, instead of pain manipulation or disabling them.

Both very interesting and fun martial arts to learn.
I feel that everyone should take up a martial art, it calms you down and teaches you the best time to use it instead of straight up punching someone in the face.

I,e where sports where purely made for scoring points, Martial arts had to change to be considered a sport by adding a point scoring system, like a point stop sparing and the such.

I've practised Shotokan for four years, and last year I've been into a WTF club. I didn't really like it the sport in itself, since it's not really martial art anymore, but the training was quite intense.

I'm still a pretty bad kicker, though. I can do basic stuffs and some backward/sideward jumping kick, but that's it.

I've been looking for a while for a free place to train, since in clubs I have to follow the teachings there. I fucking wish I could train and master the Domawashi Kaitengeri.

I practice techniques from several different arts, mainly Asian, and have since given up listing them all off for people so I take the matrix route and just say I know kung fu. When it comes to weapon styles I lean more towards Chinese forms, namely with spears, jian, fans, and staffs. I would love to start up a club or mini school or something but nobody around me is interested. Its surprising since when anyone around here says "fight" they usually mean middle school brawling or street boxing. Anyone ever tries to box me around here I'd have no problem planting my heel square in their nose. Its disgraceful how the concept of martial arts has fallen from such grace as European knighthood or Japanese Bushido from centuries past.

>>544 I am not having a go or anything just my own thoughts, and maybe something you should think about.

Sometimes I do find it funny when people say they have trained in multiple Martial arts, the only way someone could be any good in all of them is to have at lest obtained a "5th Dan" in each of the disciplines, or even higher.

Yes you and some others may have learned techniques from training in different disciplines, but it does mean that you have leaned all of the techniques properly until you have reached a higher degree in said martial art.

You should be at least a 4th Dan before you even thinking about setting up a club, and still be in training.

Even my own Tae-Kwon Do instructor/master who is a 7th dan, also holds a 5th dan in kick boxing, and even he only started training people in kick boxing when he was a 4th dan in kick boxing, meaning you really need to know you're stuff.

You also need something like a instructor training license and insurance to train people, and likely some other stuff too.

I was 12 when I started, but there are plenty of people who started training at my club who where over 30. It might be a bit awkward at first, but as long as you apply yourself during practice, it really doesn't matter when you start. Personally, I prefer to teach adults over kids or teenagers. There's less of an attitude issue, and they tend to pay better attention too.

>>553 BJJ is incredibly effective in the ring/cage, due to the joint locks and chokes being difficult to escape from. However, it is almost entirely worthless for self-defense, as most techniques are based on ground fighting, which is just as painful for you as them if you are on concrete.
Judo has less of a focus on locks and holds, it is based more around throws with some holds as well. It is more balanced, but I do not believe there are any techniques for immobilising your opponents legs/feet, and the holds you learn are in general less effective than those of BJJ.
All in all, the two styles complement each other very well, so I would recommend learning both if possible.

>>558 what style of Tae Kwon-do do you do?, as I do ITF style, there is sparing self defence and there is self defence hold and releases, which you should be learning.

You could say same thing about martial arts are marketing, *but only if you go through grades quickly* which also means the person teaching you only wants to make money out of you, and is a black belt factory, which in turn means you don't learn anything properly.

Adding to what I said before there are good instructor/masters
who want you to put everything you got into the lesson when training while teaching you the right stuff, and there are bad instructor/masters that only want to make money out of you and not teach you anything properly.

I have been training for a little over 8 years in Tae kwon-do ITF style, but I put off my black bet grading for a good two years and a half because I felt that I was not ready for it, I went for my black belt earlier this year and passed,:D

but before the grading you have to do had to do a 4 to 5 ish hours of pre-grading which is harder then the actual grading it's self. XD + you also have a written theory.

My friends who are still in high school are already black belts. In my Tae kwon-do ITF club it's like every 3 months for a grading from white to blue, then it's every 6 months from blue to black stripe, think you can try the pre-grading for black belt after 6 months when you are a black stripe but I think it's a little longer, if I remember rightly.

562 Name: LittleRat : 2014-12-08 06:43 ID:wwCZPr7o [Del]

I do Karate: More precisely Kenpo Karate around the blue belt... Its been so long, but in my dojo it was were we learned disarm. About 2 belts down from mastery belt. Still practice out of the dojos.

I undertook the self defence classes that leads to a part of the Canadian police training course. I know a friend who does Judo and I learned a bit from him, I know jujitsu or at least a few moves because I meet one who used them on me and on few others in a course.

I know the mechanics of about 17 combat sports and I have great balance and visualisation. As long as my body is strong enough I can reproduce the movement under 10 try's.

I also do Parkour and Ukemi.

Each dojos grade differently... But in my case I have the stamina close to a full karate combat user when all the techniques were done to divert blows and to retaliate *never punching first*

I am just sorry that you train with who you did to make you feel like you needed to lash out somewhere.

All I say to you is try an find a Martial art that you like or want to try with a good instructor/master, and make sure to find out as much as you can before hand, also if you know someone who dose that martial art talk to them about it to find out more.

>>568 yes it is an unsafe website because a warning popped up from my "Norton 360" computer protection program, when I went onto that website.

If I could break down self defence I would say there is two types, one where you are sparring/fighting someone using blocks and the second one would be when someone has already or grabbed you and you need to get out of it.

If you look at Tae kwon-do and karate you could say they look similar on a lot of move and you would be right, that's because Choi Choi Hong Hi the founder of Tae kwon-do gained a second Dan in shotokan karate in the 1940's which was at the time a fairly high Dan ranking in karate, back then in karate and all other martial arts they did not have Dan ranks higher then 5th Dan.

Also in the army they don't use any specific named martial art, it's just close combat training self defence, knowing a martial art most likely would help before hand.

I know at one point that boxing was taught for hand to hand combat in the army like in WW2.

So as a young punk, I learned Street Fighting. Well, it was "kill or be killed" world back then. I taught myself how to kick box.
Then later I learned discipline from The Art of Karate. Like my Sensi was always on my back to make me learn the right way of the warrior. Or bushido, if you like.
Later I went back to kickboxing and was taught my a guy named Erik Loveless.
This guy was amazing.
Now I'm in wrestling and hope to finally get my black belt in karate (waited for more then 2 years now).
I am not sure if wrestling is considered as a MA.
But it teaches discipline. That should count.

I wish to learn Krav Maga, Savate, Capuara, and many other things.

Good Seoshi but once you reach black belt please avoid geting like some people and thinking your a master. I have great expectaton from what I read.

Black belt means you achieved the adept level of the basics. Teachers as nothing more to teach you. Its then up to you to take it forward and develope your style and techniques.

I am now close to 10 to 12 years of practicing mostly outside dojos. And I feel like I barely scratched the surface of what I can do...

I don't actually NEED a black belt because a simple strip of fabric cannot convey the life lessons that I learned from my Sensei. My Kickboxing instructor was the person who told me that after a while the belt can't hold everything that you have progressed with.
I am not making fun of the rank of the belt. That would heinous beyond means.

At the same time, I sometimes think that I don't deserve the rank of black belt because I know that I can be better.

Rest assured, I refrain from using the term "Master" to describe my self. I actually still hesitate to call myself a black belt too sometimes.Man, this comment box can't even hold up the value of everything significant that I learned over the years as a "self proclaimed combat technician".

And I totally got that feeling of 'Barely scratching the surface'. No matter how much I have been doing this, I know that I am not good enough. Not in a self-hate way, but knowing that I can be better drives me.

Dude, I think you get what I'm saying. Its difficult to describe on this mere text box the idea that I'm trying to convey. XD

>>586 Hey Shiro neko, what Tae Kwon-do style do you do?

I,e like ITF style, WTF style, Rhee.

and what belt system is that?, as for my Tae Kwon-do club/school goes up like this -

White 10th kup, Yellow strip 9th, Yellow 8th, Green strip 7th, Green 6th, Blue strip 5th, Blue 4th, Red strip 3td, Red 2nd kup, Black strip 1st, then Black belt 1st Dan an so on.

The strip is like in the middle of the belt over the last colour.

>>567 Hmm now that I realise, I'm not actually sure to be honest. I'm guessing it's the WTF style. I researched a bit but none of the belt system i follow go with any of the styles you mentioned

I hear in America that belt system is most common, here we don't have the green belt or brown belt, instead we have red. Also an interesting thing is you guys pronounce it 'Kup' while we pronounce it as 'Gup'. Pretty cool how these things can vary between styles.

So what style do you follow?

>>614 I would suggest that you keep up doing karate while also doing kendo, btw getting you're first dan in any martial art is not the end of the long road, and it also dose not mean you know everything about the martial art you are training in,

basically what it does mean when you get you're first dan in any martial art is when you really start learning any martail art, everything before then is just to build you up to it and for what comes next, think of all the coloured belts as negative numbers -10 -9 -8 -7 and so on.

Also the only thing I can add to that is try getting up to at least 3rd dan or even 4th dan before thinking about another martial art.

618 Name: Kaisuke : 2015-02-09 11:19 ID:+V2ycrs0 [Del]

>>617 I didn't understand that, try to clear that up -

you where a 3rd dan black belt or where you going for you 1st dan black belt?

If you where going for you're first dan then it can likely be done with in a year, but if you where a 3rd dan and wanted to grade it's more then likely 2 or 3 years after you're last grading.

But I have said it before there are some bad martial art instructors/master who likely are not much higher then 2sd or 3rd dan who should not be teaching anything, and only want money out of you at the end of the day.

If you are going to take up any martial art in you're area do a little bit of research on the person who is running the club and see if they are part of a bigger group, it also help to know someone who is already doing the martial art you wish to do.

If you are going to do sets of push ups do them in 10's, and if it's starts getting harder do them in small bursts of 5's.

Should I assume that Mag and Magnolia are the same person?

You don't need to quote your own post here. I asked because some people write things in misleading ways. I don't know you personally, so I couldn't be sure if you where the type to add in unnecessary words when you're unsure about something. "Kickboxing Cardio" wasn't capitalized, so I couldn't assume that it was the proper name of the class that the gym is offering. So I asked for clarification. But since you stressed that it is, in fact, called a "kickboxing cardio" class, you probably won't get any sort of sparring practice there. They'll likely be more focused on getting in a good workout than on practicing technique.

>>1 "Budō, a Japanese term describing Japanese martial arts."

"Budō (武道?) is a Japanese term describing modern Japanese martial arts.[1][2][3] Literally translated it means the "Martial Way", and may be thought of as the "Way of War".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budo
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bud%C5%8D

in other words the word "Budō" is not the name of the martial art you do, and Karate is just Karate, and from what you said is you do "Kenjitsu, bojutsu, and jujitsu"

Started taking muay thai and Brazilian ju jitsu classes recently. Its very fun to be in a semu violent situation without anyone actually getting hurt. My experience with violence has always been real and undisciplined. Its cool to learn some real martial arts as a sport instead of self defense.

I only started a few months ago of Aikido. Let me share some observation.

Pros:
I am very very weak. If I have to do arm wrestling, I would lose 100% all the time. While learning Aikido, I learnt to not depend on my muscles but learnt to depend on directing forces using either my own centre or using the momentum from the enemy. It works really great!

For beginners, the ukemi(receiving attacks) is very useful. You learnt to constantly keep your distance to get the minimum damage and the least exposure to dangerous stabbings. There are also a couple of general techniques that can work on almost anyone, like First Principle and the Second Principle.

Cons:
I realised that a lot of the techniques are developed to work against people who knew martial arts. Aikido exploits how martial artists keep their distance and judge danger points. In this sense, some of the techniques would hardly work on people who don't know any martial arts or know how to respond. In this sense, Aikido should be used against people who are already well conditioned in Martial Arts.

My suggestion would be that for total beginners, you can learn from Aikido the principle of not using brute force ("muscle" - you shouldn't feel much tiredness or muscle ache after trainings or you have done it wrong...).

Next, learn how to receive attacks(ukemi and wrist contact points - keeping distance)

Learn the more general techniques that can be used on anyone like First Principle and Second Principle. Then, from that point onwards you can try other martial arts and come back with a more experience martial artist. Then you will understand a lot more on how some techniques are developed that way (if you get a good sensei, the sensei really try to bring in other martial arts to prove his/her point).
--------------------
I know I'm just a beginner in Martial Arts but Aikido helps me a lot due to my weak body. However, I get lost most of the times because I just don't understand how some techniques are developed in some ways that cannot be executed on people clueless on martial arts guarding and distance-keeping.

I've been doing Kickboxing for a while, since i was like 8, kept going till i was about 13-14, i almost got to black belt too, I couldn't go to the gradings though as i kept getting sick at the point of the year they were held, stopped for about a year and i started going back with my older brother recently, its been pretty fun, though i don't miss the aching body after the nights of sparring.

I do Hakko Denshin Ryū jūjutsu. We do wrist locks, chokes, throws, and all that great stuff. Jūjutsu means "soft art" so the philosophy is unlike that of something like Wing Chun or Tae kwondo which is basically to destroy the opponent (not that I dislike those arts, I was in Tae kwondo for a long time). Our philosophy is to practice compassion and mercy, so we try to do the least permanent damage to the opponent as possible. Of course, we cause LOTS of pain, as that is our prime mode of control. We also have an associated shiatsu art: Kokodo Shiatsu.

>>721 I don't practice it anymore, but I did practice a commonly known style referred to as ITF. It stands for international Tae Kwon-Do federation, and It's a more traditional style of Tae Kwon-Do. We didn't have grades, but rather a belt system at my studio. I am currently a first degree black belt. I considered returning to earn my second degree black belt, but instead decided to start studying something that offered more self defense knowledge.
