Hello! I recently came accross a picture of a classmate of mine from the third grade. He was Japanese, and he said his name was "Sail," but it was really "Seiru" (he just said 'sail' to make it easier for us 8 year old Americans to pronounce it). He always had shoulder-length hair. It never got longer or shorter. It always made people think he was a girl, but he kept it shoulder-length. When asked why, he said that he had to keep it long.
So my question is: Is there a Japanese tradition that makes men keep their hair shoulder-length? Or is it just a tradtion that is not Japanese that Sail's family adopted? I've been taking Japanese for four years but I am not aware of any religion or Japanese tradition that involves a mandatory hair-length, so do any of you know what it might have been?
I'm not entirely sure, but the only Japanese hair tradition for males that I am aware of is the chonmage. So....maybe it could be a family tradition or just personal preference.
