Insomnia. What keeps you awake at night? (59)

1 Name: Raix : 2011-12-16 23:16 ID:X1LFEvLT [Del]

Well lately I've just been having a hard time falling asleep at night even if I'm exhausted. Yet again, this is one of those nights. I try to keep myself occupied with music, reading, talking with people, etc. but some nights I'll just lie awake staring at the ceiling and let my thoughts race and race. So I guess as a random disscussion, what do you guys do if you can't sleep at night? What kind of things do you think about? etc etc etc.

I find myself unable to sleep as soon as I lie down. So I created "late night cinema". It's basically when I watch videos/DVDs while still lying in bed and awake.

This is what keeps me up at night

6 Name: Lynne : 2011-12-17 08:59 ID:YEekBshk [Del]

I get hungry at night. I can't sleep because my stomach is grumbling and I have no idea why because I usually finish all (a lot) of food during the day.
And yes, I just stare and stare at the ceiling for hours.

I had pretty bad insomnia when I was younger. Even now, it takes two or three hours to actually fall asleep once I lay down. Sometimes I have a really bad day and can't fall asleep the full night. I generally come up with stories in my head, whether it be my own or based on a recent book I read or anime I watched. I generally just pass out after a while.

I don't get the point posting under another name.

It probably wasn't noticed as no one seemed to care for this topic

Anywho, I usually just watch a movie I have seen already many times. Keeps me busy, but I am not overly engaged due to having already seen it before.

Sir, I believe you either lengthened your name or forgot the explanation point for your trip code. You might want to fix that :O

My insomnia started at the age of nine that was many years ago, so I'm used to it. I have some tips that help but don't cure. First off try to make sure you're in your bed at a certian time every night in a few weeks your bodys "clock" will notice, and the clock might start having your body go to "sleep mode". Second try calming your mind and thinking of nothing, or making a story up in your head. The 1st one doesn't help me but it helps my dad. The 2nd one is what gets me to sleep, after a few hours. I nottice I almost always sleep from the time period of 12 am to 3 am, so maybe thats the first method?

The intense desire to learn programming and see if it's truly the career path I want. Seeing as non-majors have to waitlist in the classes, and the Ludum Dare started yesterday, I've finally gotten an IDE and am going to attempt Java. Perhaps not the best language, but C++ will likely be taught in class. I just want to understand the concepts. And although I'm going through a tutorial by the letter, I am actually starting to understand what things do. It helps that eclipse describes the commands.

All this so I can someday create a map app for UCSB to help freshmen like me who were clueless searching for their classes, but that's a long ways away if I want it on the Apple store.

This, is what keeps me up at night. And tonight, I'm doing something about it, at 4 in the morning.

>>20 Oh. That's interesting. Good luck with that, hope you're successful in your self-teaching!
If you need help at all, remember to use that one thread someone made on the random board for homework help, even though it technically isn't. Or make a thread in Technology. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who knows a programming language or two and wouldn't mind assisting.

But if you still want a tripcode, just put an exclamation mark after your name and then type in a password, like if you were making an account.

By the way.. if you're having trouble sleeping it's not recommended to use the computer, watch TV, or stare at any light-producing things.

Very true, but if you, like me, can't help it, I have a solution, for the PC at least.

There's a program called F.lux that changes the lighting of your monitor based on the local time. It actually does help a bit.

If anything should help, it's doing something tedious, like reading a boring book or doing complicated math problems. Just something you would much rather not be doing. That'll get you to sleep quick! :D

Due to my job forcing me into a nocturnal lifestyle, I find it hard to get to sleep befroe 3:00 a.m., but I always find myself falling asleep while trying to stay up and read manga or play a handheld video game; anything that requires minimal amounts of brain and body activity.

since my laptop is in bed, and i never fall asleep just like that(and i mean never) i just iscribble, or chat, or read manga, or watch anime till i pass out, usually it's 3-4 in the morning till that happens and i feel dead by then, but i wake up after 2 hours and it starts from new..
i'm almost about to get myself sleepingpills...

Sometimes, I hear things at night. Often it is just the sound of the apartment settling and such, but every now and then I feel very uneasy for some reason. I can't fall asleep during these times because I lie there with my eyes close but ears open, listening and listening.

49 Name: tasha : 2012-03-08 15:27 ID:vvPUp9wQ [Del]

it usually takes me around 45 mins to an hour to fall asleep. sometimes even more.i'm not really sure why. i can never just fall asleep like while watching tv or a movie, so i can't just do that until i fall asleep.
i think maybe i'm kept awake because i'm thinking. i can never just empty my head and do nothing. even when i'm awake i can't only watch tv. i have to read a book or draw or go on the internet.

Day 5 of zero sleep. My eyes are red and wide awake. Day 7, I will sleep because of collapse. It happens every 4 months, so I'm used to it. I don't use medication for it...I want natural sleep, not drug induced sleep.

53 Name: Weems !2eFzSAGExE : 2012-04-29 12:12 ID:ebPHJ7kN [Del]

>>52 I'm an insomniac as well, and I do find it hard to believe that you have stayed up for 5 days. after 96 hours without sleep, your body literally starts to shut down. There is no way you have made it 5 days without any sleep. You would have already collapsed by day 5, if you haven't gotten ANY sleep.

I believe you exaggerate, because the body shuts itself down after 96 hours without sleep as a defense mechanism.

54 Name: BarabiSama!!C8QPa1Mt : 2012-04-29 12:54 ID:sEFEDJWB [Del]

55 Name: Vanlandinghale : 2012-04-29 13:12 ID:EL85iSpm [Del]

The body is strong or it is weak. Weakened bodies are most likely to drop after day 3. Stronger bodies can go without sleep for 7-9 days. After 96 hours, the body will go into a safe mode. Still fucntioning, still thriving. Day 6, the body starts to shut down to get the rest required. Day 7, sleep overcomes most anyone.

Come with me back to the Middle East. Let me show you what lack of sleep does to the human body. The most sleep I can get before I wake up, if I'm lucky, is 4-5 hours. Then afterwards, I return to a normal sleep pattern...7-8 hours. 4 months afterwards, 5 days of no sleep...constantly pacing, can't sit still....always waiting for one thing that will never happen.

Here's the facts: This place here, this website, is probably the only time you will hear from me. Offline, in the world, I could pass you, and not realize it, and vice versa. While I know my limitations, none of you do not. You know your own, but not anothers. Will power, my dear friends, keeps a body going, long after fatigue set in. My body, my control...my override. :)
