Trying to Do Better (2)

I turned 18 last year and I’m about to turn 19, I know I’m an adult however I struggle to do basic household things cause I often freeze as I try to do them as I’m reminded of traumatic experiences. For example, when I do dishes I feel the need to run or be on edge because I don’t feel safe. I’m an adult at this point and I’m not sure how to do a lot of basic things because I’m too afraid to do them. I’ve been working at getting better at it but it’s incredibly hard. Does anyone have any advice to help detrain the stress response of avoiding these really basic tasks.

you're still young and have a lot of time to work on this, so don't feel bad about it. it sounds like a first step would be figuring out how to decouple the negative response to these tasks and making them at the very least neutral (maybe even one day positive?). easier said than done and I'm not qualified enough to help there. it does sound like this is cleaning-related trauma which a lot of people out there suffer from, so you're not alone!

some resources that have helped me in regards to housekeeping: UFYH, 'How to Keep House While Drowning' by KC Davis. you might also find some benefit by watching some of marathon cleaning vids.
