My father and his girlfriend want me to sign up for this elective in my school, called media. I hate the class, and I feel anxious whenever I enter the class. The feeling makes me feel like I’m about to vomit. I signed up for the next year, but I can still get out and pick a new elective. I want to make my dad happy and not upset or disappointed in me, and idea of what I should do? Thanks in advance

I don't remember finding electives super important in high school, except as grade-boosters. I think a lot of people just chose them based on whether they were easy and/or interesting. (I definitely did.) I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be something that you would enjoy, not something you take out of obligation– hence the name "elective".

^That's probably what I would've told my father if I were in your shoes.

I would probably try to come up with an alternative plan so that you don't get treated like it's an impulsive decision. If you have another elective in mind then you can tell him about it, and why taking that one instead of media would be good for you. Or, if you would rather have a free period instead of an elective (if that's an option for you?), then explain the merits of that (extra time for hw, studying, etc).

Also, just for more context - do they know how the class makes you feel? And is there a reason why they specifically want you to take media? Do they find the course material important or just interesting to them?

If the latter, then I don't think they'd be disappointed if you switched out of it. Again, electives aren't all that important in the long run. With the exception of ones like home-ec or personal finance, I'd be surprised if your father and his girlfriend still rely on skills they learned in their high school electives.

Regardless, I think you should just switch out of the class. It's better to do well in an elective you *actually* want to take, than to suffer through an anxiety-inducing one for the whole year.

Not sure if this was helpful, but I hope something in there was. Good luck.
