I don't think becoming numb is a good thing and to me it sounds like you did nothing wrong and you were being caring and kind. It sounds like he was the one being toxic and taking advantage of how nice you are. I think maybe you should try to move on to somebody who will appreciate you more and will also help you out instead of being a jerk. Maybe later on you can confront him about how you feel, but as for now you should find someone to talk to so you don't bottle up your emotions. I hope this helps and just remember, the world isn't as bad as you think.
