Honestly, I believe you'd have better luck at any guitar shop than you will here. Even online guitar shops would yield higher results. What kind of Bass are you looking at getting? Do you have an idea what you are looking for?

If it's your first, then I'd recommend shelling out $150 or so for a starter kit. I still have mine by Ibanez.

As a Bass Guitarist in New Jersey, I would recommend looking for a fender precision bass. If you look around you could probably find one for around $500. I've had one for over a decade now, still in amazing condition with minimal maintenance. It really depends on how dedicated you are though. If you're looking to be really into playing bass, I would go for the long haul. Otherwise I would look for one around $180 on guitar center.
