I plan on leaving home and joining the French Foreign Legion for a new beginning. I live in the US currently, I'm 20 years old, live with my parents and enrolled in college. The thing is college isn't for me and I am not happy with my life. Me and a few other friends plan on getting our own way to France to join. I might not see my family for awhile due to money issues and if I'm accepted it'll be five years before I'll be back. Would it be worse to leave and not say or to tell them and leave regardless of how they feel? Any advice?

I highly suggest you tell them first without suddenly disappearing on them. I think your family deserves to know if they really care about you and shelter you. Plus, they could even give you some pointers or advice if you're lucky. You don't have to be afraid if you think that they won't like your idea as long as you really wish to go to France. Your decision is yours alone, and you own your own life. Of course, you can show any gratitude you have for those who have helped you up to now. Just trust your feelings and find your certainty that joining the French Foreign Legion will be better for you.

I agree with Shimizu. Please do what your heart desires but it's best to tell your family so they don't worry too much about you. I wish you the best of luck!
