Many people have asked why I speak with such propriety, and my answer had not been revealed. My answer is now clear...It is because I believe speaking with propriety demonstrates a demeanor of intelligence and higher intellect. Please reply if you agree with me or disagree.

Hi! It's an interesting topic but I think I'll have to disagree with this one.

If speaking with propriety as you said gives you a sense of confidence in your intellect, then, by all means, go ahead. It's a great thing to put your wide vocabulary to use! However, I personally don't find a person's manner of speech all that important when trying to discern one's intellect. I tend to be very wary when people associate styles of speech with intelligence as it often stems from some kind of internalized bias. Like how people who speak African American Vernacular English (where a lot of modern 'slang' comes from) or people whose first language isn't English are often mocked and regarded as less intelligent when the two don't necessarily correlate.

Instead, I try to prioritize the content of one's speech. I've seen a lot of cases where people speak or write with impeccable grammar and vocabulary but manage to say nothing meaningful or worthwhile. (I tend to be very annoyed when people buff up lackluster speech and writing with SAT words to sound smarter.) Grammar was developed for the purpose of giving language a uniform structure that allows people to convey their thoughts with the most clarity possible. However, if people can express their ideas well enough without following the conventional rules of grammar, I think they're doing well enough without them.

There's also the matter of intelligence being a very subjective concept with different standards of measurement (ie IQ, EI, multiple intelligences theory, etc.) but that's a matter for another day. Anyways, sorry for the lengthy response, but this is a topic I'm rather passionate about. (This is coming from an English buff who goes to school with a lot of ESL students.) Thanks for the great question!
