i'm in high school but take college classes. after one of my classes some random guy came up to me and asked if i wanted to come to a valentine's day party with him. i said that i was busy that weekend but thanks anyway (this is also the first time i have been asked out).
i said no because, quite frankly, i was a little skeezed out by the whole situation. this guy was like three times my size, i have never talked to him before, a college valentine's day party pretty much sounds like gathering together as many people as possible and just doing whatever, and i have no interest in drinking or random sexual encounters.

was i being overly paranoid about the whole thing? i feel pretty guilty about lying.

"dont take candy from strangers" , isnt this something parents tell their kids ? you shouldn`t feel guilty , this is a random guy you dont know ,and he asked you for something you dont know what may happen. No you just kept yourself safe and thats all ! dont worry to much about it.

I mean, by what you said, he just asked you once and that was it. If that was all, then he was probably just trying to bring you to the party. If he kept persisting, then he probably was a creep.
