Counseling, (4)

I have been considering going to to counseling. I have never taking it into serious consideration before. I am calling one soon but I don't know how it works. I don't know if it actually helps or not. I am somewhat scared of the thought.

I mean, you talk about your problems, they suggest solutions or treatments. No need to be that afraid since everything is confidential unless you threaten to kill you or someone else and they don't force you to talk.(unlike mine)

The experience varies from person to person but if you are getting counseling from a health professional, this is what you should expect:
1- Total confidentiality. They will not speak of you or your case to anyone without your explicit consent and/or unless your life is in danger

2- They will ask you questions and make use of whatever response you give them (if at all) to gain an understanding of your troubles. Treatments are not usually obvious (depending on the case), so do not expect them to immediately give you solutions.

3- Depending on the type of counselor you are seeking, you can expect them to ask you to answer a questionnaire or have a little chats at the beginning about your medical history, if you ever had any counseling before, your level of stress and your purposes in seeking counseling. You will always have the liberty to not answer, but note that they need as much information as they gather to even start figuring out how to help.

4- The effectiveness of counseling and any psychotherapeutic treatment depends not only on the counselor/therapist's skills, but also on the patient's openness of mind, the severity of the issues and time. To doubt its effectiveness is normal, but do know that your mind is a powerful tool and complete dismissal of your counselor's words is to simply doom yourself to failure. The foundation of counseling is trust.

P.S: However, if you find that your counselor's advices are putting your life in danger and/or that there is blatant and consistent disrespect of your person and your issues. then you should change counselor immediately.

Your level-headed and smart. I like you. I give up my villainous ways.
Sincerest apologies, all. I'm going to go meditate on a mountain for several weeks to learn my lesson.
