how would one cheer up an anxious friend ? (3)

i hope i'm putting this in the right category.. but, ah, whatever-- it's worth a shot. say you've got a friend with a few mental illnesses (schizophrenia, bpd, did, and a few others of the like) which you can relate to. you're really close, but you realized they were in a relationship that was really abusive. you convince them to end the relationship, but they're now a total wreck and can't calm down.

this is my situation, and i don't know what to do.. i feel like i ruined their whole night and i think they might blame me for being terrible or something.. i only wanted to help-- does anyone have any idea how i could possibly cheer them up or get them to relax ? we're currently watching cartoons together, but they're trembling and i feel so guilty.. please, any suggestions would be appreciated.

The only thing I can suggest now is talk. There can be two ways to handle this. Either begin with why you told them to break up, and ask how they're doing and if there is anything you can do, or you can side-step that, and talk about random things (you will have to be the one leading the conversation, even if you're doing all the talking and they don't say much) to try a lighten them up.

The first option may prevent them from blaming you if it goes well, but the second option is what might be best for them at the moment.

I hope things settle down.

I'm a little surprised you made all this effort to come to us instead of spilling your guts to them... You just told strangers how you feel, now tell them. Then listen when they tell you how they feel. Cartoons later, I recommend shinchan.
