Should I Feel Bad?.. (2)

So I'm a starting film maker in Detroit MI, and I have a huge passion for the film industry even only being in highschool. I signed up for the film class and for the most part ifs full of people I know who take the class as a blowoff, releasing crap films just to get the easy A. Now of that group of people my friend Lucy is in the class. And we have been making films for the past few times, mainly me doing the work and her coming with the ideas. Recently however we were asked to do a music video. Being in Detroit, and being surrounded by the hiphop genre all the time, I chose a hiphop song even non lovers of the genre can enjoy. The song also allows me to do a very cool video idea. Now here comes the problem, Lucy loves Korean Pop music, and I respect that. But she wants to do a Korean song for the project, I know we will get laughed at in the class if we do it, despite if the video is decent. So I told her we probably shouldn't do the song because it was going to be too hard to conceptualize. I was trying to save her feelings by just not saying that we would probably get flamed down for using a KPop song.

Being smart, she told me the argument was bullshit.. so I shot her down telling her that our audience wound most likely reject our video because of it. And explained how i respected her choice of music she enjoys, but it wouldnt workout because its not widely accepted over here. But shes a little depressed now and feel bad.. what should I do?

Hello Kazutora,

First, good luck with your film, I hope that you would be able to do what you want and that, in the future, I might see one of your film on screen.

Now, it is quite a problem you're facing. I understand where you're coming from when saying that using K-pop song could attract unwanted review from your classmate, even more so, when most of the, as you said, are only here to pass time and have an easy good mark.
However, for a film maker, I think that expressing what you want with what you like is important. I know that, as you are right now, you want to do a movie that can reach a widest range of people and it's understandable since it is still the beginning of your journey.

So, I do not have a "real" answer for you but just follow your path. Your aim is to please yourself and the audience; your aim is to do your best; your aim is to have a project in which both of you can find a agreement concerning this movie. Talk to her, exchange ideas and reach a common ground.

Now, I know what I said doesn't really help but I can only say that your idea is good. So is her franc attitude towards what she likes. In that sense, you are both right. The answers lies in wether you want this project to be very professional or rather personal.
In any case, you should talk to her about this, slowly and quietly and—as I said earlier—find the answer with her. Feeling depressed is normal. It's only by struggling, being rejected, trying again that we can improve ourselves. Talk to her and everything should be alright.

Hoping that I could help you without confusing you even more than you currently are.
