I'm wondering how big durarara is in Japan or at least at tokoyo/ikebukuro?
Not a lot of people talk about it in america but from images I've seen in japan like cafes, that elevator with the characters on it, shrines for the character's birthday, is it just normal or a lot of people excited for it?
I think it's a situation where some anime does good in america and others in japan. Trigun and Baccano did better in america but Durarara did better in Japan which is a shame b/c all of them are good.

Nah, it's not that popular. Japan is the capital of anime, but there are actually very few hardcore otakus. Cuple that with low birth rate and harsh economic conditions, people just don't have time to admire those things. Those products are merely prototypes to attract foreign attention or to be imported.

If a rotten weeb wants to go to Japan, unless you like being alienated by society or are a hardcore masochist, Akihabara, or Akiba for short, is the district which you can call your anime heaven. Stuff like maid cafes and otaku shops are abundant there and it would be weird for people to look down on you for going to those places. So please don't go to anywhere in Japan besides Akiba because being an otaku is frowned upon in almost everywhere else. Don't go to Ikebukuro if you're going to exhibit your otaku hobbies, please.
