How to concvince my parents (4)

1 Name: Cherry : 2016-02-01 14:09 ID:k/W02klA [Del]

Hey everyone , I wanted you advuce on how I can convince my parents to let be become an aid worker. I know the risks and what it takes and I have come to the conculsion that if I cannot take it I'll quit after my first mission. But I've been on a similar expedition and I know this is the sort of life for me.
I've always wanted to be a doctor ever since I was a kid. My parents were okay with it since doctors earn alot of money. But I've never wanted it for the money. And I have planned ever since the 8th grade to join doctors without borders (I even sent a letter when I was 13 to them telling the charity of my plans).
I am finishing my medical degree and I am planning on spealizing on children. And plan to apply once I've reached the chairties requirments.
I told my parents and they are against the idea. I am not sure what to do? I do not want to go against their wishes but this is what I truly want to do.

Doctors without borders are certainly Heroes here in Greece saving thousands every day in the Aegean. Maybe your parents worry about your safety but if you really want to do it and you are prepared for it then maybe you need to go against their wishes for once because well this is your life your choices now , you are not a little kid anymore , your parents have done their part in raising you and certainly you might owe them for that , maybe try to invite them for dinner to talk about it more and find common ground. Well I don`t know the characteristics of your parents you know best on what to do I`m sure.

Y'know, your parents desires will never be achieved until you...die basically. Then they'll say you were a wonderful person and blaaahh blah blaaaah. I don't want you to die obviously but the point is that your parents will never be content no matter how much of an angel you are.

My sister for example was like a being from the heavens as though the sun shined out of her ass (in a good way). Parents wanted her to be a lawyer or a doctor, earn the bucks and they didn't want it any other way. To these parents, everything falls in a straight line. But life is never straight.

She took her career and passion into her own hands. So now my sister is a healthy and happy 40 year old, rich, doing what she loves and is the principal of her own school. Now my parents love her to the extent I think they'll lick the soles of her feet (exaggeration but y'know what I mean).

You're gonna have to take the chance. One of the only reasons they don't want you to do this is that they're attached to you. Sure you can take advice from them. But know that the reason why some people become great and are remembered is thanks to them pushing against some tide.

I'm in a similar predicament at the moment. Everyone is scared I wanna work with the police force and criminals but this is something I feel I want to/ need to do.

Well, you said you were finishing your MD, meaning you're technically beyond your parent's influence. They hold no legal power over you, so if you want to then they would just have to learn to accept it. If you're adamant on convincing your parents, then they'll see just how much you care, and will hopefully change their minds and support you in your endevours.
