Insomnia Taking a Toll (6)

I need some help. This is hard to do so I literally am sucking up my pride right now on this one. I don't like asking for help. I have insomnia. I've been on every medication for it out there. But the meds my doctor has on me now don't have that much effect on me anymore. I was hoping you guys could tell me what you do when you can't sleep. What do you do to make yourself tired?
My insomnia is so bad I could go weeks even months without sleep before I eventually collapse and it's cutting into my life. It's starting to effect my life at home and my social life.

Sleep with pets.
There are research in that area, sleeping with pets, especially cats and dogs put you into a relaxed state which can help you sleep better. Unless you're allergic ofc.
Alao, mind the temperature when you sleep. A cool temp works best for me.

Your diet plays a big role in your sleep. Some people suggest eating a full amount before going to bed, not so much that it becomes difficult to breathe though...For dinner I usually have half the amount that I had for lunch (I've got eating problems btw) and then drink a warm glass of warm milk either plain or flavoured just before going to bed. It's pretty relaxing for me and hopefully it'll work for you.

But the most important thing is what's going on with you psychologically. I'm not an expert when it comes to Insomnia but I know enough to say that your mind tricks you into thinking it isn't time to sleep. It won't even listen to your body's plight at that point. No matter what day it is or if you have some event going on, keep a routine. Do the things that seem to make you relax (maybe what I and/or Neko suggested) but make sure that once you find the perfect relaxing procedure you STICK TO IT. Do it at the time you're meant to do it, in the exact order.

Since it's a big problem affecting your life in many ways, don't be afraid to let family members and friends know you got to do this to get a good night's sleep. Then they'll know not to bother you at this time as you switch to sleep mode.

Keep all phones and other devices out of your reach. I'm not sure if people do this, but keep an analog clock either hanging up on your wall or a tiny one near you. To some people it has a very relaxing sound.

And remember once you wake up, keep a routine for that too. You wake up, drink some water and then clean up your bed. Just the stuff you do in the morning that make your body feel like, "I feel set for the day ahead!".

I'm with Neko on the temperature thing. I find that when I can't sleep, it's often because I'm too warm.

You might want to try minimizing all light too--shutting the curtains, not looking at your phone, computer, etc. might help. There are studies out there that say that looking at light keeps your brain from producing one of the chemicals you need in order to fall asleep.

Other from that, when I can't sleep, I just focus on doing all the things I'd be doing if I was sleeping--laying down, breathing reaaallly slowly, not moving, trying not to think, etc. Fake it till you make it, you know? And if you still don't fall asleep, at least you'll be a little more rested if you make your body mimic sleep than if you spent that time reading a book or something.
