The key is communication sir! (or ma'am). Getting into volunteer groups will help you learn about your community. Some other hotspots are hospitals, schools, local council. Also the internet, twitter might help you catch onto trends a bit faster than normal. You have to become a super news-a-holic. But I warn you, you might end up getting glasses sooner ._.
