How to talk with Spanish friend? (3)

I have this Spanish-artist friend who lives in Spain and we have been chatting for 3 months now and we a good friends.

I really want to chat with him more personally to get to know him better and I don't think we can Skype because of the time zone difference and plus he only speaks spanish. He can understand some messages but most are translated into google translate sometimes.

Do you think I can ask him to see if I can send him postcards or letter? Or is it bit too rushed and should wait until we are ready for it? We aren't romantically involved

And how do people with foreign language relationships deal with the language barrier if you only want to learn parts of the other language? OR should I learn more about Spanish?

First off, establish that you are not looking for a romantic relationship.
After that, look at the rest of your options:
Didja ask him if Skyping him was good? Make a time schedule for that if you need to.
I think that sending letters and other things are alright as long as you established that there will be no romantic mushy-mushy sh#t between you guys.
The language barrier will exist as long as you do not try to understand him. I don't think you need to go buy Rossetta Stone or some sh#t, but just understand how his language and culture works.
