This is a bit of a personal story, but that's what this thread is about I guess.

Ever since I was a freshman in high school, I've been part of a robotics club. This may sound like any nerds dream, but in reality, it is one of the most humbling, and brutal, experiences that one can go through. Let me sum it up by saying that it is no easy task, and people often fall behind, are shunned, and end up quitting.

I won't go into my personal experience, but I've reached my senior year as a minor helper on the mechanical team, and now I've noticed a trend among members that I almost wish I hadn't. As a robotics club, we naturally gain some of the more socially inept into our team. Sometimes, this is a good thing, we welcome them into the family, and it really helps them grow as a person. Then, there is another case, which is much more worrying. Some people come into the club with a glaring lack of humility, they want to fulfill this strange idea that they made in their head where they become super successful and everyone loves them. They often focus more on this than the people around them. They don't make friends, they try to take control at the wrong times, and fail to learn anything because they are too focused on this goal. No one wants to help them, no one wants to teach them, and this only makes them resent those around them more.

It seems like they treat robotics as a role playing game, or a class, where there success, or good grade is practically a foregone conclusion.

So what can I do? I can't help but sympathize, I went through something similar, but I got over it. I won't lie, I find them annoying, but I want to help them. How do you break through to someone who only talks to you in order to strengthen their own self image?

Maybe there isn't an answer and this is just a rant, but I'd like to hear what the people here think.

>>1 Pretty much 15-17 year old me. Fucking terrible time in life. Kick them out of the group. It's for the best.
