I have a lot of issues with trying to date girls, not the preppy kind, girls who actually matter, mostly because of my checkered past, any advice?

Don't focus on your past. Focus on who you are now and who you can be in the future. Can you imagine interacting w/ yourself? Is it a pleasant experience? If not, change something. :)
