Ask yourself "Do I really love him?" If the answer is yes then you have to change yourself. Even if it's a little, you need to compromise in order for your relationship to work.
He sounds like a tsundere type, simply meaning he's mean, cold, hard on the outside and really sweet on the outside. So when he's hurt he'll get even worse because what's underneath is a soft, sweet, and venerable person.
I know how hard it is to be away from someone that's busy with school, and being on the receiving end of those messages I can tell you that a message a day is a big deal. It means a lot, it may not seem much but please at least do that for him. It doesn't take a lot of time, like applying lipstick. Just find that tiny bit of time and message him once a day. Call him sometimes, Skype him, etc. just make him feel loved! That's all he wants.
