Guys, I am really wanting to learn japanese but I don't have the money on hand to get any books to help me out. If any of you guys have any sites, flash cards, old books, or just simply advise that could help me that would be great. comment if you anything of these sorts.

I saw something about this in the "information broker" thread. Also, I'd probably just do a combination of searching the internet, watching anime, and making friends. Oh, also perhaps using a chat-room dedicated to practice. I kind of want to learn several languages, and this is my underlying plan so far.

if you learned japanese, you could watch all of the animes that are not subbed yet!it would be like being able to breath under water.

Check out a book from a local library, getting a library card is free. Also, try googling online lessons on speaking Japanese. Quizlet, an online site, has free flashcards and should have some in Japanese.

I'm in my second year learning Japanese, and it's been awesome so far.

I think one of the reasons why I and everyone else that takes the class are accelerating so quickly is because our teacher talks to us in Japanese. It's called comprehensible input.

Since you can't take a class, I'd suggest finding a book that explains the grammar and word order, then try watching anime (obviously subbed) and see if you can recognize where certain things are. If you're really up to a challenge, try watching it without the subs, although that's pretty advanced.

Also, another note. If you're just wanting to be able to hear and understand Japanese, then it'll be pretty much as expected; however, if you want to be able to read and write Japanese, you'll have to learn the three syllabaries - hirigana, katakana, and kanji. Out of the three, both hirigana and katakana shouldn't be too difficult, just practice a lot.

It's the kanji that's the killer. Since the Japanese people borrowed Chinese characters to have a written language, not only are there many separate characters each representing something unique, but each individual character can have a variety of different readings.

if you really want to delve into kanji, I suggest that instead of getting a standard English/Japanese dictionary, check out A New Dictionary of Kanji Usage. It shows stroke order, has different readings, and is sorted by how frequently the kanji is used. It also has three lookup indecies so you can find something based off of it's reading, stroke count, or English meaning.

I hope this helped a bit, and if you want any additional help from me, feel free to ask. Japanese is an awesome language and it deserves to be shared.

Listen to >>11 and >>12 . Learning Japanese through anime is inefficient and plain dumb to use alone. If you're going to do it, use the methods 11 and 12 pointed out AND then do it.
