1 Name: Tekato : 2013-02-26 16:15 ID:oFiP29El [Del]

Well, im going to Japan this spring break. My parents thought it would be good if I learned another language. So I picked Japanese, and im going to be sleeping in dorms. So any advice on what to do, or where to go.

4 thing about living in Japan (that you don't see coming)

Based on what I have heard:

1. Bring toilet paper, or buy. (They apparently don't have them in public bathrooms...)
2. Don't bother with cars. Just stick with trains to get from point A to point B. Taxis maybe.
3. You can find anything from candy to underwair in certain vending machines.
4. It's expensive in general. About 2 - 3 times than your generic American products. So you may want to buy ingredients and cook your meals rather than buy. (assuming you know how to cook, if not, google is a pretty nice pal in those kinds of situations).
5. Japan is going through some hard times because of the whole tsunami mess, etc. So you may want to just bear that fact in mind.
6. I hope you like fish.

I myself have been to Japan before.

- There IS toilet paper in the public bathrooms. Their toilets are actually rather high-tech and well facilitated.
- Trains are definitely the easiest, cheapest, and generally fastest form of transport. The subway lines can be a bit confusing and hard to navigate for foreigners, however.
- There are practically vending machines EVERYWHERE. And they have a wide range of products available from them as well, like what >>3 said.
- ATMs can be found in practically every 7-11, or any other largish convenience store.

I don't really have any advice on where to go, but I suggest looking up places and brochures online.
