Japan or America? (10)

I was told that this belongs in the Personal board since I'm asking for advice. Originally it was in the Random board. I wanna know what you guys think I should do.

So, I want to major in Graphic Design or Animation or something of the sort, and I want to work for Bones and do the animation for their Anime. BUT they don't have a branch in America as far as I can tell. Their site is in Japanese (which I will learn in College) and so is almost everything I can find. The page I found in English said nothing about an American branch. I also don't have any support system in Japan. No friends or family to help me out if something goes wrong, or anything of the sort. So, what I want to know, is what do you think I should do? Settle for something else here in America, or go ahead and try to get to Japan and work for my dream company? I'm torn.

Maybe you can find an online revenue source that you can maintain in Japan. The problem is making sure the revenue is constant.

Yeah. A way to make money on the Internet. Something you can do anywhere.

It's kind of a long-shot, and rather unrealistic to go work for a company overseas when you don't even currently speak the language fluently. Right now, your driving goal is because you like to watch anime, and that's never a good thing to build off of when you're deciding your career.

It's like all the people who play video games, say they want to be game designers, take computer science, and proceed to fail the shit out of computer science because all they actually wanted to do was make characters. Do you currently have any background in animation, or art of any sort?

I suggest you actually go on that path, first. Take the basic art courses, learn animation, and decide from there if you're even cut out for it before jumping to a rash conclusion. You don't want to make your entire plan revolve around "move to Japan and work for one particular famous company." Realistically, they won't hire you unless you've already got a decent amount of work experience under your belt or unless you're just somehow exceptionally great at what you do.

A harsh, but sobering, fact to always consider in this kind of situation is, who are the people they hire? Are they fresh-out-of-college foreigners, or are they experienced professionals from their own country? Even between a professional American animator versus a professional Japanese animator, who do you think they'd choose by default? And for that matter, do they even need more animators right now? It's one thing to qualify, and another thing to actually get hired. It's not something they'd just do out of charity because it's what you want.

Basically, if animation is something you really want to do, then do it. But don't be picky about where you work, especially at first. Someone truly dedicated to their craft will take whatever they can get and work their way up - otherwise they're in it for the wrong reasons. You'll probably be extremely lucky to get a high-position job in a prominent American animation studio somewhere.

>>6 I am taking a Graphic Design course right now, in my Sophomore year in High School. I plan to take all the other related classes, and it all fits with my schedule, so I wont be behind on any credits when I graduate. We're getting into Animation later on this year.

Thanks for your reply. You've pointed out several things that I failed to realize, and I appreciate it!
