Do I have MPD (11)

1 Name: TT : 2012-10-08 16:11 ID:mV4ZF4PV [Del]

I have looked up most of the symptoms and I wanted to know if these are right, any comments if I do. I'm just wondering here and I don't actually think I have MPD but it was just a thought.

I have black outs where I can't remember why I was in the room I'm in.
I don't remember much of my childhood.
I act differently with different people.
I usually feel unreal.
I have voices in my head, usually one in particular.
I find people congratulating me for things I don't even remember doing.
People tell me I've insulted them when I don't really remember it even though it apparently happened a few minutes ago.
I find people telling me I have said things that I don't remember saying.

I heard that a lot of people with MPD/DID go through a lot of trauma but the only trauma I had was moving around a lot and being an outcast at the only school I stayed longer than a year in. I was seriously lonely all my life and didn't have any real friends. My relationship with my family wasn't so great either.

I have no idea what MPD or DID is.

>>2 MPD is Multiple Personality Disorder. Its basically where you seem to have more than one personality.

>>1 Although I'm not a therapist, I'm pretty sure that you do not have MPD. It's not a, "black out;" you just forgot why you were in the room. It happens to all of us. Literally. Everyone forgets pieces of their childhood, some more than others. Most people change how they act (intentionally or unintentionally) depending on who they're with.

Feeling "unreal" is kind of... eh. You need to elaborate on that one.

Voices in your head is a bad sign - you may be dellusional and should get it checked out, but it's not a sign of MDP.

It's normal to forget things you've said or done. Some people have worse memories than others. I'm in the same category as you are where I can forget things from just a few moments ago. I can forget what I did the entire day. That's a another reason why I like computers and planners - I can always go back and verify what I was doing.

With the insults, a lot of people take completely normal comments as insults. Those are sensitive people, and I have the same problem, especially when it's someone that I don't really care about; I'm not going to bother remembering what I said to someone I don't like.

MPD is much more extreme than the things you're talking about, as far as I know.

Keep in mind, voices in your head is a different concept than talking to yourself in your head. A lot of people (more than those who like to admit it) have different versions of themselves in their head that they use to play out conversations or to think about the consequences versus the deficits of situations. Having a voice in your head is something that is completely out of your control.

How bout... ask someone who has a medical degree, not the interwebs

Most people who have MPD talk to themselves and have different personalities for different occasions. You might just have bad memory, since I am pretty sure you would know if you had MPD. Most of the cases have people being rebellious as well. Though I had a manager that had full length conversations with herself, so I thought she had at least 2 personalities.

Also if you are only hearing one voice that is usually your own, but the problems lies when you start hearing multiple voices, or seeing people that aren't real. I think most schizophrenics are the paranoid, since that is what my grandma was, and what my psych book said. In that case you are just overly paranoid for no reason, even if you aren't hearing voices.

Just to clear something up:
Under the current DSM (IV I believe), it's actually classified as DID (Dissociate Identity Disorder).

Anyways:
"Black outs"
Not necessarily.
"Don't remember most of my childhood"
Welcome to the club!
"I act differently with different people"
So does everyone. People naturally act different around their parents than their friends, some with more differentiation, some with less.
"I usually feel unreal"
Shouldn't be relative to DID, from what I remember.
"I have voices in my head, usually one in particular"
Leaning towards Schizophrenia here.
"I find people congratulating me for things I don't even remember doing"
Memory loss of some sorts, perhaps.
"People tell me I've insulted them when I don't really remember it even though it apparently happened a few minutes ago"
Ok, might want to look into that memory loss thing, seriously.
"I find people telling me I have said things that I don't remember saying"
Same thing here.

From what little I know, most cases of DID are aware of what the other personalities are doing 24/7, so it seems unlikely that you have DID. The human short term memory can capture about an average of 7 items for only a few seconds, so forgetfulness is common. If it's a real problem though, you might need to look into memory loss or some such.

lol I find it seriously funny that you guys all think I have terrible memory loss when I have the best memory in my class! I do have a great memory and I did talk to my psychologist about it and I don't have MPD so please just let this thread die!

>>10 Situational memory and literary memory tend to be different, for the record. Different people remember different things better.

Anyway.
