How do I save these animals?! (16)

1 Name: Whisper : 2012-09-21 23:51 ID:rIL/pSwu [Del]

So there's this business in my city that is like a no-kill animal shelter.. except it is actually a living hell for those poor animals. No, I am not one of those nature-loving animal nut cases, I mean these animals are literally being mistreated. How do I know? I use to volunteer there. But you could just walk in and see it for yourself, too. They are left to sit in their own feces and urine.. their food is being infected by it. The sick animals are with the well ones, and as a result, TONS are dying, and by illnesses that could EASILY be treated, which is how our dog almost died. A lot of people who have bought their pets from there ended up having it die on them. The shelter don't keep records and the person giving out "medicine" to the sick ones ISN'T EVEN A VET. What she does is illegal, but we couldn't prove it when she tried treating the dog we rescued from there.. so nothing was done. There are people who will complain about it until finally the correct authority will go down there are shut it down until "they meet the regulations" ..BUT! Then some stupid charity who thinks they are helping will donate money so those "regulations" just barely pass. They open, and they go right back to doing what they did to get them shut down in the first place. For example, all indoor cages once had a blanket in the foor. They would become soaked with urine and the bacteria would eventually kill them. For a while, this caused them to be shut down. They traded in the blankets for news paper shreds, and it opened up. A month later, back to cheap blankets. The cycle repeats! Its non-profit, but a those who have worked there catch wind that the owner may or may not be diving into donations. It would make sense, considering how the place NEVER improves, despite large donations and no employees to pay(all volunteers). However, I can't go to news or police with that because, by law, the owner could then sue me for "slandering her name" and affecting her business. I don't have "proof" she dives into the money. The animals need to be removed! I can't house the pets myself because they are ridiculously over-priced! Fellow Dollars, what can I possibly do? I don't want to see anymore animals suffer...

Pictures and video. Go in there with a camera (or have someone else do it if they're wary of you) and take a fuckton of pictures and videos of the animals. Make sure your timestamp is on before you do it, and make sure it's clear that you took it there. Post all of it publicly online. Send hard copies to the police and to all the decent shelters within twenty miles. The other shelters might be willing to take them in. Of course, they may not. Even if other shelters won't take them in, you can still call different rescues for the types of dogs and see if any of them would be interested.

When you send the hard copies to the police, try to have pictures of the employees you're suspicious of and explain why you have those suspicions.

If you know what charities are giving them money, make sure that these pictures and such get to them, as well.

If you can't take pictures or video, then you're SOL. It sucks that you have to rely on half-assed authorities, but sometimes there's not much else to do about it. The only other way would be to get a lot of people to adopt the animals they have, but they would just use the money from the adoptions to bring in more animals, you know?

Either what Barabi said, or sneak in at night and let them all out.

By any means necessary.

This will most likely piss you off, but what about all of the homeless people, and children, who live in their own feces. Why focus on the animals and not the people? Yes it is messed up that animals live like that, but shouldn't we focus more on the people who live just as bad. But think of all the expenses as well to have that place. Rent for such a complex isn't cheap, neither is food, along with utilities to keep the animals from freezing. It is possible that the owner is pocketing the money, but you would need hard evidence to prove it, since the cops won't do anything from he say.

>>4 You make a good point, thanks for the comment. Maybe its because I feel that, with the right advice, i have a chance to make a difference for the animals that I actually see. I dont see the children or know of any like that here.. I dont think just me could help kids like that, and honestly, I dont think I could mentally handle being a social worker some day. As far as homeless, i do volunteer when I can and offer food to the homeless we see. I just needed to know if the pet situation was hopeless, i guess.

>>8 Depending on the region and which group you call on, the response can be either nonexistent or....messy. I'd go with what Barabi said first, because once you've got the images, that's all you need to convince anyone of the issue.

>>11 Nono, let's take a full spin at this one.
>>4 This issue OP had was that he had witnessed, even worked around these animals. I'm not questioning whether the issue you mentioned is or isn't a laudable work, what I will question is why you seem so adamant to complain to an individual that wants to to good in a way that seems to say that what he's trying to do isn't "good enough." Here's the breakdown.
>OP sees an issue with animal cruelty and wants to do something about it.
>While OP could be aiding in other things, it should be recognized that he is still trying to ensure that the right thing is being done for these animals.
>It is a distinct possibility that the issues you've mentioned don't exist enough where OP is to make a feasible impact, and you have little right to question him.
>When OP takes action to do good, no matter what that is, it opens doors to do other things. By helping these animals, OP is likely to be more qualified to help people in bad situations as well.

TL;DR
This is OP's situation, not yours. No one stated that this is what we all should do, this is just the cards OP is holding right now. If you want to aid the homeless, by all means do so, but OP seems to have a problem that needs to be addressed in it's own rights, and asking him "why bother" isn't going to solve it.

I was going to respond, but Barabi has it covered.

>>12 Yeah, I am not saying it is a bad thing trying to help out the animals, but most people care more for animals than people. In an experiment similar to what Stanley Milgram where people are acting to be shocked and most people will pass the lethal shock. However when an animal was being shocked almost nobody would shock them.
Also in order to truly have a case you need hard evidence, or maybe a witness would suffice. Nothing can be done from he say, not even a warrant to search the premises will be issued.

>>14 There's no way to tell for sure. All you can do is try in these situations and hope the best comes of it.

No need to be so pessimistic, Sid :l
