I've always hidden the fact that i am an Otaku... Sure i like Anime, Cosplaying and Video Games with a passion but i always set my limits and never let myself go over the boundaries....until two days ago i suddenly found out that someone i know saw me in a convention that was being held in a mall.. that person went and posted pictures of me while cosplaying in a social network site and tagged everyone i know... a friend of mine,being concerned about it, went and told me about it. What i saw was horrible alot of people insulting me and saying things that can be considered so harsh that it would make you feel like your soul is being ripped apart... now it leaves me with this.. why are people so mean to Otakus just because we like things with a passion :( we never did anything bad to them... why...

Well, you can ask the social network site to take down the thread/post if it's really painful. Other than that, I know that people can be assholes however if those people who are "friends" of yours than they really aren't your friends. I'd try getting that post/thread taken down.

Worst comes to worst, don't worry about it. Take it in with a smile and find new friends. I know it's hard to do it, I've done it before so I know, but it's the best thing to do.

Educate yourself on your chosen terminology, and then you'll have a better understanding of why people hate.

You, however, are not Otaku. For the reasons pointed out above, and discussed in the linked thread, you are simply "weaboo".

Personally, I would burn you before I burned the otaku.

They are quite misunderstood, just like every sub-culture.
1. People do not understand them or their way of life.
2. They see people who are a part of the sub-culture do something horrible and think all of the members of it are evil.
These are the two biggest reasons for hostility against otaku. In the end, it does not really matter if people make fun of you for being an otaku. Just go enjoy you anime and games without caring what others think.

yeah, you could try but it's not that easy to forget about things like this. I hate otakus basically because of Leigha's copy-pasta. And when I see someone going around in cosplay in public (especially fucking school) in groups, my god do i want to kill them.

BUT,
1. I don't think you're otaku anyways.
2. You were at a convention, which the whole point (I believe) is to cosplay the shit out of people. So you know what, fuck them. Enjoy what you enjoy doing, and don't let other people fuck that up for you with what they say. That's like cutting off your arm because people decided that it's not pretty to look at, but it's just like any other arm. (My god, do my analogies suck ass).

And pretty please with a cherry on top, don't become an otaku (as in like >>4).

Well as I see those people who are MEAN to otakus were just jealous! So what if we find our place to be, what we want to be? Why do they care so much? They don't have rights! We are free to do what we want as long as we don't hurt anybody!Oh! Maybe because they think that we were childish in actions and in our thoughts? Hmpt! It's not a good reason though! Those otaku haters will burn to hell! I hate them too! >___< This is just our way of giving our gratitude to what makes us happy! If they were in our place I know they would understand us! I never seen people being mean to otakus in my city. Maybe they're being mean cause you kept it a secret. The reasons for secrets is because you're ashamed of it, and people will use that shame to their advantage.

If you ask me,the people who insulted you should all get a hit in the face.It is very irritating to see such things happen.However,you shouldn't get worked up over it.If you do,you would just create more entertainment for them.Unfortunately,many people do indeed laugh and make fun of those who have uncommon taste,different ideas and opinions.What you should do if someone makes fun of you in real life or the Internet,is to laugh and fling a sharp comment at them.Be proud about being an Otaku,do no hide it because this is what makes you you.

I know that. I felt that. But I always defended what I like, because things like that have become parts of me. Hold your head high, and show them that being an otaku is worth it. do good at what you do, continue how you live, and smile. One day they will acknowledge the fact that you are an otaku. All you have to do is be respectable in every way you can.

In my case, I am known to be an otaku. Of course my parents were harsh at first, pointing every mistake I do to anime. Some people even bullied me. That was in high school. But I kept doing it. It led to my development in the field of arts and literature. And I kept doing good at school, and I just kept everything . I didn't need to excel. I just have to be better that most. So where am I now. Still an otaku, a gamer, a book worm, still an eye liner wearing emo who loves black, and a music lover. But I am also studying Architecture, the associate editor of our course paper, a staffer in two organizations, and a member of most. I know a lot of people, higher and lower batch, and lately, I realized that I have a lot of friends. They all know that I am a fiction geek, but hey, what can they say? I earned their respect well enough for them not to give a shit about me loving fiction. I can sport pigtails even if I am in full clad uniform, eyeliners on, cross earrings and all that. And people fondly tell me that I look like an anime, or that I look cool, or that I am awesome.

It is about getting respect back, so don't you dare give in and let them take a part of you away. It would be your loss.

When I think of sad things I think of it in a more positive, albeit concieted, light. If people are being jerks to you because you're an otaku just think/say back "You're just jelous 'cause (Insert your reason here)".

Hating someone because they are different. It's been going on since the birth of humanity and just because it"s "bad and looked down upon", still doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I myself am just getting into the begginers colsplaying scene and I learned that "Oh, you hate me? Good to know your oppinion, now please move out of my way. Thank you".

its because people hate what they dont under stand but it also could mean they are jelis i admit in public all the time i like anime cosplaying and everything to do with anime some times people but it could be because they have something diffrent they like that they are afraid to admit

Well, "otaku" is the more insulting term in Japan. It's basically when you're so absorbed in SOMETHING (not just anime) at the risk of deteriorating social skills and relationships. So I wouldn't use that word; more like "anime enthusiast" or just "a person who likes anime/manga."
Secondly, I've gotten the sharp end of the sword on this issue as well. I know exactly where you're coming from. I've NEVER gone around screaming "OMG KAWAII DESU NE NARUTO-KUN-SAMA-SAN" like some of the social rejects out there, but whenever I would say "Eh, anime is cool" it was like "THE PLAGUE!!!! IT LIVES AMONG US."
Fuck everyone else and do YOU. Because in the end, your friends will love YOU and YOU'LL be happier finding those people who love YOU for who you are.

that's what i've been wondering...in my place, most people actually know Anime, and I have a lot of Anime loving friends, and at our place, Anime Addicts/Otakus (like ME) are kinda even praised for being so knowledgable in Anime...but for the others...they don't give a fck about what we do and stuff...so, it really depends on where you live...but please, no matter what they do, don't give in. Drive your passion into something unimaginable!! NEVER GIVE UP!! SOMEDAY YOU'LL SHOW THEM!!! I HOPE THAT SOMEDAY, THIS WORLD WILL CHANGE ABOUT THIS PERCEPTION!!
