What Should I Do? (18)

I need some advice here. A lot of you guys have seen me rant about my mom, but despite that, I do love her, and I do worry about her. Over the years, her memory has been slowly getting worse and worse. This year? It's taken a major turn for the worse. She can't remember things that we discussed yesterday. Her whole mindest of what I like has been pretty much reverted to when I was little; she never remembers anything that has changed. Say, my tastes. When I was little, I only liked chocolate ice cream. But I gradually came to like coffee ice cream. I have been talking about how much I like coffee ice cream for the past three or four years, yet she just can't grasp it. Whenever I bring it up to her that I like coffee ice cream, she always turns to me in shock and goes, "Really? I thought you only liked chocolate ice cream. You should have told me! I would buy it more often since we both like it." She doesn't believe me when I tell her that we've talked about it time and time again.

It sounds stupid, but it's not just that. This is how most of our conversations are starting to get. She can't remember anything current. When she gives me my weekly pay, she will sometimes she completely forgot she even paid me and try to pay me two, three, or even four times afterwards. She also will not pay me for weeks, and when I ask her why, she says that she just paid me. When I tell her that was weeks ago, she's always really confused.

I don't want to say she has alzheimers or anything like that since she's still pretty young for that; she's only in her early fifties. But I'm worried. She is starting to notice it too now. Just... she hasn't noticed it /enough/, and she denies everything when I bring it up that she has forgotten it. I figured that her memory was just getting worse with age since, well, I assumed that's what happened. But it's getting out of hand now. This isn't just "old age" memory loss. I want her to go to a doctor and get it checked out at the very least. Then again, I also don't want to offend or worry her. How should I go about confronting her with this?

Memory loss can be linked to medication in some cases. Some members of my family have had memory loss after taking medication for sleep aid.

Well, it could be early-onset Alzheimer's. The only way to know for sure is to see a physician.

It may be best to just show her that you're worried and hope she will agree to seeing a doctor of her own accord.

>>14 Fuck you, sir. This is a serious matter.

>>15 GHF is a pretty common troll around here. I'm only responding because it wouldn't leave me alone even if I shut up. Either way, I suggest you ignore it.

I don't know for sure what it is, and I'm not going to make assumptions. I just need suggestions on how to bring it up to her and convince her to go. She's not the type of person to go just because I'm worried.

My family's been going through some tough stuff with Alzheimer's too. My grandpa (77 years old) who was sort of abusive to my dad and has some mental scarring from serving in the Korean War is kind of....well....he's not doing too well. I only visit him each summer when we're back up in New England, so I don't know the specifics about how it came on and how he does day to day, but it's true that you definitely need to bring it up to her when she's in a good mood. However, if she starts being defensive, you have to be firm. You certainly shouldn't go at this alone, but try to be comforting just as much as you are worried. You never know what it is until she sees a doctor or professional about it, so that obviously has to be done. I don't know if any of this really helped, I can only imagine what's going on over there seeing as I have issues with it only once a year when I visit. But yeah. Tough stuff to deal with.

Here's a suggestion just tell the old hoe that she has alzheimers and she better go to the doctor before she forgets who the fuck you are!
