Istiqlal Mosque, was built exactly 43 years ago on 22 February 1978. Positioned next to Jakarta Cathedral and Merdeka Square, it symbolizes the religious harmony and tolerance as promoted in Pancasila, Indonesia's five principles of philosophy foundation.

But not only that, the mosque itself turned out to have been designed by a christian architect Friedrich Silaban. Soekarno the current president in 1955 held a mosque design competition, and since Friedrich was a friend of his, asked whether he should participate in the competition or not. "You ought to use an alias if you're going to participate, else no one would be willing to vote for your design." Mr president said.

His concern was reasonable, for a christian to design a mosque would be ludicrous. But in a twist of event, from 22 nominated design, Friedrich's got the highest vote from the competition's juries who of course, consisted of only muslims.

And so for the next 17 years, he watches the construction's progress on-site. Every morning from 7 AM, he'd stand-by on the construction site. Not to mention, his house was located in the neighbouring city, so he had to travel back and forth every single day. That's just how passionate he is on this massive project.
