This reminds me of the case of Phineas Gage, an American railroad foreman who got caught in a gruesome accident on duty when an iron rod shot clean up and out through his head, via blasting powder reaction.

He was reportedly never the same man after the incident damaged his brain, but Gage is lauded for his seemingly improbable survival and his impact on the world of neuroscience. Some people really are just that lucky.
