The best we will ever be able to accomplish is hoping any encounter with a stranger doesn't turn up badly, and its been like that forever. Giving a stranger your trust will always open a window for some form of harm to be done to you, but luckily, most of the time it ends up ok, but that is because of the consequences associated with causing any form of harm to another person set in place by laws and social norms.
Now, I'm not saying that this person deserved it. This is truly tragic. I just think its foolish to ever think that there was a point in time you could just trust any person you meet.
