BARCELONA/MADRID, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Catalonia will move on Monday to declare independence from Spain after holding a banned referendum, pushing the European Union nation towards a rupture that threatens the foundations of its young democracy.

Catalan President Carles Puigdemont said he favored mediation to find a way out of the crisis but that Spain's central government had rejected this. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's government responded by calling on Catalonia to "return to the path of law" first before any negotiations.

Mireia Boya, a Catalan lawmaker from the pro-independence Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) party, said a declaration of independence would follow a parliamentary session on Monday to evaluate the results of the Oct. 1 vote to break away.

It's funny how in some reports Spain is saying it will remain WHOLE despite arguments to the contrary...

...when it's not even whole to begin with.

HELLO Portugal.lol

I'm a Catalan Dollar, so I know about that!
Even here, news are lying everywhere to make Catalonia or Spain (not including Catalonia, of close) to be seen as innocent, depending on who is supposed to be explaining what's happening. It seems that being in Barcelona city is a little dangerous now, but not soooo much. I'll see that soon by myself...

I don't get why is that important, but I'm a boy.

And the situation isn't as bad as it seems. Most of us are exactly the same than before. Nothing changed at all. Just more strikes. That's all.

The part I find disappointing is other countries and even businesses didn't bother to wonder if Catalonia would or could run their economy better than Spain...they just automatically sided with Spain and businesses pulled out suddenly including some banking.

Ah well, apparently an hour after independence Spain declared they are stripping autonomy to keep unity. Curious how this will play out. Not to mention saying they do this to maintain their constitution or such...I'm sitting bear thinking 'wait,if they declared themselves independent, doesn't that men's they basically threw your Spanish constitution out the door and arnt bound to its laws anymore?' Or do I have that wrong?
