However, as the algae provides the coral with the nutrients it requires to survives (and also it's colour, thus the term "bleaching"),the coral goes into a "starvation mode", where it can only survive for a short period of time until the algae returns to being safe.
So... maybe the first course of action to saving the Great Barrier Reef would be to NOT build the giant as Indian Coal Mine RIGHT NEXT to the reef... but alas, our Prime Minister only cares for the mining industry and not the future of this earth.
This is the same guy that brought "Clean Coal" into a courtroom for evidence.
