Former President of Cuba Fidel Castro, after several years of health issues, passed away at 90. Surprising, at least to me; Fidel was a dedicated leader. After fighting with Che Guevara to topple dictator Batista and establish a Communist state, Castro continued to foster a Marxist revolution and improve Cuba, despite American embargoes and multiple attempted assassinations by the CIA.
Also moving was his brother's sounding off of the announcement with "Hasta la victoria siempre", and old battlecry of the Cuban Revolution, and old comrade of Fidel and Raul's, Ernesto Che Guevara.
As someone who grew up reading about the Cuban Revolution and the works of Fidel and Raul Castro, and other influential figures such as Che, I'm saddened to see him go. At the same time, it's good to know that he made it to 90, several years after retiring. He lived a long time for someone the CIA wanted dead.
