"Dozens of French towns and villages, mostly on the Cote d'Azur, have banned beachwear that "conspicuously" shows a person's religion -- a measure aimed at the full-body Islamic swimsuit but which has also been used against women wearing long clothes and a headscarf."

On Tuesday, a 34-year-old mother, who gave her name only as Siam, told AFP she was fined on the beach for wearing leggings, a tunic and a headscarf.

"I had no intention of swimming," the woman, who was accompanied by her children at the time, said.

A witness to the scene, journalist Mathilde Cusin, said some onlookers had applauded the police and shouted at Siam to "go home".

Kbibech referred to her case in a statement ahead of his meeting with Cazeneuve.

This isn't even about religion anymore, this is about freedom.

She says she receives messages from shoppers of all religions and backgrounds. One, from a non-Muslim in Warwick, Queensland on Friday morning said "It is just a swimsuit for heaven's sake." Another, from a client in the US: "I am a non-Muslim southern Californian woman. I am a skin cancer survivor, which means I can't get out in the sun [in a regular swimsuit]."

This isn't even about religion anymore, this is about freedom.

"It's nonsense and it's silly," she says of the new rules made by French mayors. "They have not thought hard enough, they are using a piece of fabric as a political item. Little do they know a lot of non-Muslims are wearing it."

And within the Muslim community, the garment, like the veil, is a symbol of female choice and empowerment, Zanetti adds.

"It's not a crime to choose what to wear, we're not restricted, we're not forced upon. We have more power than people think we do. We choose to be modest. I know women who have divorced their husbands because they didn't allow them to wear the veil."

Jesus Christ...just let them wear whatever they want.
She has the right to cover her body.

This was made because France is supposed to be secular. Everyone is integrated better here than in another country, iff they respect French customs while in public.

None in the street wear religions clothing and show their religion, except a few Muslims. The last ones to also this were Polish Christians in the early 20th century. And they were also heavily criticised.

Moreover, this suit was unknown in France at the beginning of the summer ; none felt the need to wear it before. (I've learnt what is a burkini in the TV show Quantico).
Thus, wearing it now, in a context of war against IS, is considered provocative. (A group even organised a "Burkini day".)

And we don't have the same issue than in the Anglo-saxon world.

I'm not even sure of the nationality or religious belief of a lot of fellow students in my school. Religion doesn't influence the relation between poeple, or very few.

Last time, I thought a guy was French, yet I learnt he was Moroccan when I saw his ID in his wallet at the restaurant.

So we're far from the black people being shot dead by the police in the US ; or the poor situation in the UK.

Btw, you guys in the UK voted to Leave because of the intrusion from the UE, yet you demonstrate and send the mayor of London against a French law.

To whatever extent the law is bad, you're a bit conflicting, aren't you ?

>>5 Some what off topic dude

If you mean Boris Johnson as mayor of London, he's has not been mayor of London since even before the UK referendum, in fact he is the UK foreign office,
also there is no poor situation in the UK, we are doing quite well in fact the pound is back up and it's still strong towards the Euro at £1 = 1.17 Euro, and still strong the to Dollar still at £1 = 1.31 US.

back on topic: The burka is not in any way has anything to do with Muslims religion or faith, it's not even in the Quran, I also don't see what the problem is with that woman with the wetsuit on at a beach, heck just about 100 years ago people where wearing almost the same amount at the beach.

>>1 I think this information is given a little off context.

The towns that decided to ban burkinis are all located near Nice, i.e. the town where the terrorist attack which killed 80 people took place. People who are living around are probably still traumatized. In this kind of context, the amalgam between Muslims and Islamists is easily made. Unfortunately.

Moreover, as the presidential elections in France are coming closer, the debate is getting radicalized. Terrorism is a central question in the electoral campaign. Politics are using this kind of news to raise polemics, show their position or differentiate themselves from other candidates. They aren't making anything to calm down the debate.
