Armed robbers used Pokémon Go to target victims in Missouri (25)

1 Name: Kit : 2016-07-11 00:47 ID:fPUYYqgp [Del]

As popular as Pokémon Go has become, that it sends players out into the real world to find Pokémon is creating new, unexpected problems. The O'Fallon, Missouri Police Department reported on Facebook today that armed robbers have used the app to lure victims in and rob them at gunpoint.

The police received reports about the robberies and were able to apprehend four suspects in the area.

Well that was fast. I thought it'd take a few more weeks before the carnage begins.

This is ridiculous. These Pokemon Go events are spreading in double time and it's seriously going too far.

I don't know yet if the game is available and playable in my country, but I'm actually unusually concerned...

And this is only the beginning... Hopefully things will die down as time goes on.

Are they using incense to lure both pokemon and trainers? I think that's how they get their victim

I here that a group of people were doing this around my area, so I'm not really surprised to hear that it's happening in other places, too. But this would get quite troublesome for everyone playing Pokemon Go... -_-

This is kinda scary. How are we going to stop this? It seems like it's not worth it to get Pokemon Go.

>>8 they are already working or worked out the problem, also remember to stay around places you know and are safe, if you are going to go off to somewhere you have never been before go in a group of friends and stay safe.

I agree you should stay in familiar places. Also the game hasnt been brought to Canada yet so if this problem continues then they might actually ban the game. It depends

Well, this gives me more initiative to carry my knife while playing Pokemon Go.
Us Pokemon Go players and Dollars have to help each other out in any way we can, whether it is proactive or reactive, direct or indirect.
The only way we can insure to help Dollars is to consider every person as a potential Dollar.
If you see someone being mugged while playing Pokemon Go, then call the Police respective to your area. Also, when walking around playing Pokemon Go, only use the game as a map, and think of safe places to stand and stand there before looking at your phone.

>>11 That's is no reason to carry a knife omfg, if you are out and about playing Pokemon Go just try and stay in areas/places you know, instead if wondering off to some where you don't know very well, as I already said on >>9.

fyi carrying a knife will not make you any safer.

You should be able to "wander" anywhere. It is part of learning what a location is like. It sure is entertaining to watch.

I believe that this is a perfectly good reason to carry a knife. If you fear for your life when going out then it's fine to carry one, if you feel like you should bring something illegal(assuming there are legal knives in your country) you might as well not leave the house for Poke'Mon Go. As for staying in places you know, that is the trend for getting murdered or mugged or robbed anyways. You can get robbed at gunpoint if you're in your favorite park, your house, or some street you've never been on. Heck, you can even get beat up right next to a police kiosk.

Isn't carrying a knife forbidden in some countries? Also, I would be worried that it would be used against me and if someone has a gun, they might shoot as soon as they notice I have a weapon, too, no matter which one.

I assume the most dangerous thing about Pokémon Go in this case is that it is a world-wide business now and everything happens at the same time. Plus, as Odion (>>3) mentioned, the events are planned and happening almost way too quickly to grasp it.

The thing is, what can the Dollars do? We obviously can only help those people we know personally. Otherwise we would probably need something similar to the Dollars Emergency Map. A chance for people to contact someone in their area so they are not leaving the house alone during the night, for example.

I hope things will get better soon...

I don't think leaving the house at night by yourself to get a Pokémon isn't very safe in the first place...

I made a similar comment in the other thread about the Pokemon go attacks, but most injuries involving the game seem to be caused by sheer stupidity. Not to say it shouldn't be stopped, of course, but any common meeting place IRL is a place likely to be a place where an attack could happen, and going out at night is usually considered unsafe to begin with. Plus I've seen people that I know driving while staring at the game, not looking up even to check for cars before crossing the street, tripping over things because they are too busy looking for Pokemon to watch where they are walking. I mean, the best way to stop the problems associated with the game is probably for the players to use some common sense and play safely.

This is becoming a thing everywhere.
It's a shame that people like to blame a game for their own incompetence.
Let's face it though, criminals will do what they do, and should something come along that they can take advantage of they'll do that too.
C'est la vie.

yes, armed robbers are targetting pokemon go players. nothing new there, anyone walking around with their face so far in their phone that they don't see what's in front of them is an easy and likely target here. There is a loading screen, first thing when you open the app, that says to stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Still, people walk into traffic, off cliffs, and down dark alleys staring at glowing screens. You can't fix stupid.
